The Air Force has a rich history in Utah. The first group of airmen arrived in the State in 1941, and the Air Force was established here permanently in 1948. Since then, the Air Force has played an important role in Utah's culture and economy. Air force gift history began with the purchase of a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress from the United States Army Air Forces on December 14, 1941. This aircraft was one of only two American planes to fly into Japan during World War II as part of Operation Bridge over Troubled Water. After its deployment to Japan, this plane helped contribute to victory against Japan by bombing their capital cities and other strategic targets. It is also noteworthy that this bomber was used for humanitarian relief flights during the war years (such as delivering food and medical supplies to areas under enemy control). In 1947, General Curtis LeMay organized what would become known as The Wingate Brigade which served as airborne command headquarters for III Bomber Command during Operation Paperclip which involved bringing West Germans back into compliance with Allied demands for intelligence collection services within Germany. The Orem Air Force Base gift history begins in 1945 when General George C. Marshall offered the air force a gift of five Boeing B-29 Superfortresses. The planes were delivered to Orem, UT, and became operational in 1946 as the first military jet bombers at the base. In 1957, General Curtis LeMay gave the air force another gift - two McDonnell Douglas DC-8s. These planes served as the mainstay of USAF airline service until they were retired in 1998. In 1999, General John Deutch presented the air force with its third aircraft - an Airbus A310 for cargo and passenger services. Orem, Utah is a city in south-central Utah that was founded by the Mormon pioneers in 1847. The population of Orem was estimated to be over 100,000 when it incorporated as a town in 1907. Today, Orem is the fastest-growing city in Utah and has become an important center for religious and cultural activity within the LDS Church. The first people to inhabit what is now Orem County were the Ishmaelites, who came from Arabia about 1000 BC. They built their homes near modern day Provo and were hunter-gatherers until they migrated westward around 600 BC to settle in what is today southern Utah. In 1847, Brigham Young directed his followers to move from Nauvoo, Illinois into this area of southernUtah due to the lack of land available there for them. The Mormons began building their own settlements here and by 1853 had established four towns: Provo (founded March 6th, 1853), Logan (founded December 17th, 1854), Ogden (founded May 24th, 1860), and Payson (founded October 11th,1863). It was not until 1907 that Orem became its own independent municipality. At this time it had a population of just under 50K people. In 1909 President Woodrow Wilson visited the Salt Lake Valley and pronounced Orem "the most beautiful place on earth." He also remarked on how Mormonism had taken root here among these pioneer Latter Day Saints: "Mormons are coming out here like mad dogs; I never saw anything so spread out before." This visit contributed greatly to Utopia's growth as hostility against outsiders increased during World War I as America enacted anti-Semitic laws. Although polygamy was not condoned by LDS leaders at that time there seem to have been instances where large families were managed through multiple husbands/wives rather than one man leading all aspects of life while women bore children - an ancient practice known as “segregation” or “subservience” within polygamous groups which continued even after passage of law prohibiting polygamy statewide in 1916! Although many businesses closed during prohibition Leadville lost its status as a major commercial center due largely to quotas placed upon smelters operating outside state borders which made lead production difficult without federal backing; however other small communities such as Carbonear flourished despite high taxes levied against them due primarily to mining operations taking place nearby including those at Spanish Fork Canyon which attracted prospectors looking for rich strikes deep underground! Although African Americans did work briefly cleaning up local hotels prior World War II they generally avoided senior position within local government or business because discrimination against them persisted throughout much of American society following emancipation following the Civil Rights Movement Following World War II growth resumed but with more caution since manyPotential job opportunities had been destroyed during war years thanks largely to restrictive zoning ordinances promulgated post-war . Despite efforts by Mayor James Moyle early 1970s thereafterOreme experienced some significant growth spurt reachingross100K residents by 1978 although rates continueto rise steadily ever since . By 2000 census rate stood at 133K making it one of Utopias most rapidly growing cities
On October 29, 1847, Brigham Young and his men laid the foundation for what would become Orem. The town was named after Elder Orson Hyde, one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ. On February 14, 1850, Brigham Young and a group of settlers traveled to the site where they had laid down the cornerstone. They were met by an Indians team who had been sent out by Uinta County officials to investigate what was taking place. When they didn't find any gold or other treasures on the land, they returned home without completing their mission.
