Heber, Utah is a small town in Kane County, Utah, United States. The population was 1,852 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Ogden–Clearfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Heber Valley was first settled by Mormon missionaries in 1847. In 1863, Brigham Young and some of his Latter-day Saints led an attack against the Utes in what is now Heber City. The Mormons lost but were able to take many prisoners and equipment with them. They named their new settlement after Heber Cattle Company owner Isaac Heber and his son Salmon Heber. The first store on Main Street opened in 1868 and was operated by Hyrum Smith and others from Illinois until it closed in 1903. A post office was established at Heber in 1875, but no mail arrived there until 1886 when Moses Kimball sent a letter via postal service to Nancie Phelps for her to forward to her family back home in Independence, Missouri. Mail continued arriving here intermittently through 1907 until consolidation of the two towns into one occurred that year under the name of "Heber–Ogden". After taking over operations from the old Post Office (now Exeter), the new Shepherds Crossroads Mercantile store became one of Utah's leading commercial enterprises for more than a half century before its closure in 1981; however, other local businesses such as hardware stores continue to thrive today including several banks which have been located downtown since before 1980 (). Primary school students attend Park Elementary School while Intermediate School students attend Summit Middle/High School (). The agricultural community has long supported agriculture with several hundred acres being devoted to corn production alone (), cattle operation (), hay raising () and Sunday morning services being offered at various churches (). Petroleum exploration began near Shepherds Crossing Road () during the early 1990s but did not produce any oil or gas products worth exploiting commercially (). However, subsequent development along this corridor has included a number of successful medical startups (), high-tech companies () as well as restaurants (), retail properties (), housing developments (); etc., making it one of Kane County's most active business districts .
