Clinton, Utah is a town in southern Utah that was founded in 1869. The town was named for James A. Clinton, who served as a U.S. Senator from New York and as the first Mayor of Clinton, New York. The town was incorporated in 1905 and became a city in 1907. As of the 2010 census, the population of Clinton was 6,913.[1] The history of Clinton begins with James A. Clinton who served as a U.S. Senator from New York from 1868 to 1870 and then as Mayor of Clinton, New York from 1870 to 1871 before serving again as U.S. Senator from New York until his death at the age of 72 on November 15th, 1881.[2] After his death the town name was changed toClinton after him and it has been continuously inhabited by humans since then with only a few scattered visits by other species over time[3]. One such visit occurred on July 4th, 1886 when an American white bear named George Hohman visited the town for what would be his final time before dying two weeks later at the age of 26 years old while caching food near basecamp in nearby Antelope Valley due to an exposure to high altitude sickness caused by lack of oxygen at 3 million feet (910 meters) above sea level[4]. In 1905 local businessman Lewis Sperry donated land east of present day I-15 for the construction Of The Great Salt Lake Railway which would provide access to central Utah for settlers looking for new farmland[5]. The rail line arrived in 1906 and soon began service transporting people and goods between Ogden and Provo[6], eventually reaching its terminus at Springdale along I-15 just north of today’s downtown area[7]. In 1917 during World War I servicemen living in eastern Utah stationed at Camp Lejeune west of present day Springdale established their own post called “Utah Station” whichlater became known as “Clinton” due to its location within walking distance both westward & eastward across now Interstate 15(now US- highway 95)[8][9][10][11]. It wasn't until 1984 that President Ronald Reagan dedicated Lincoln Service Park adjacent to modern day Springdale following its opening by mayor Ralph Ellison with assistance from then president George H W Bush[12] Census data show that throughout most recent decades there have been very small decreases (+0%) or no changes (+100%)in population size (-2%), employment (-3%), median household income (-1%), poverty rate (+3%) or percentage growth (0%)ofResidents residing inside City limits& County limits – instead large increases (+153%!)in numbers living outside City limits& Countylimits – particularly among those residing insideCity Limits&&outsideCountylimits where rates are highest!
The first people to live in what is now Clinton, Utah were the Paiute Indians. They first arrive around 1847 and name their settlement "Clinton." The town was founded by Captain James H. Cooke and his family. In 1896, it became a city.
