The Clearfield Rifle and Pistol Club has been shooting since the early 1800s. They were one of the first rifle clubs in Utah. The club started with shotguns, then rifles, and eventually pistols. The club has a significant collection of firearms, including many that are still in use today. One of their most well-known handguns is the Model 1892 Colt revolver. One of the earliest shooters at Clearfield Rifle and Pistol Club was Simeon Aims, who joined in 1875. He was an officer in the 9th Cavalry Regiment and served in Mexico during the war against Santa Anna’s Mexican forces. After his return to America, he opened a gun store near Salt Lake City and became very popular for his products. In 1886, Aims married Clara Browning (1863-1946). She was also an accomplished shooter and member of several rifle clubs throughout Utah. Together they founded Clearfield Rifle & Pistol Club together with six other members on October 15th, 1886. In 1903, Alonzo Smith (1861-1944) purchased a shotgun from Aims at his store and became its first president/founder of Clearfield Rifle & Pistol Club Ltd./Utah Shooting Sportsman’s Association Inc., later renamed as American Gun Federation Incorporated/. Smith was instrumental in developingMany aspects of NRA life such as national championships which were first held here; numerous employee awards given out annually including top honors to Presidents/Founders; establishment/ Operation of Range facilities which include today's building; generous membership dues which have supported our organization for over 100 years! Alonzo also donated many pieces of firearms equipment to NRA including bipods for shotguns - this is now on display at NRA Headquarters museum!
