American Fork, Utah is a small town in Utah County, located about 8 miles northeast of the city of American Fork. The population was 2,921 at the 2010 census. American Fork is one of the oldest towns in America and has been in existence since 1847. Today, American Fork is an important center for Latter-day Saints (LDS) worshiping in the Salt Lake Valley. The town was established by Mormons on April 6, 1847 as a stop on their way to Nauvoo, Illinois. Mormon pioneers first arrived in what is now American Fork during the winter of 1846-1847. The town was originally called "Bickerton" after its founder, Brigham Young's brother-in-law Bickerton Sounion. On January 9, 1850, Brigham Young issued a proclamation calling upon all Mormons living east of Salt Lake City to unite with him and form a new colony called Deseret Newsville (later renamed American Fork). This proclamation served as the foundation for American Fork's name change from "Bickerton" to "American Fork." In 1857–1858 Mormon missionaries traveled through Union County looking for people willing to emigrate westward into what would become Utah Territory. Many local residents agreed to migrate but only if they were given land south of Cedar Mesa Creek which lay within what would be known as Provo City limits today. When LDS missionaries discovered that many residents had already migrated or sold their belongings and moved away before they could be contacted by anyone from Utah Territory, they decided to rename the town after one of their own members who had helped pioneer this area - Elder George Atherton of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints (LDS Church). On October 10th 1860 Elder Atherton came downriver from Kirtland earthly Temple where he had been attending special sessions held by President Joseph Smith III regarding plans for his forthcoming First Presidency election campaign against John Taylor’s bid for office. Upon landing at Cedar Mesa Creek some farmers met him and invited him onto their farmstead but when he asked why they didn't want him there they replied that he couldn't preach because he was too old and sickly; however Smith knew better than anyone how much Elder Atherton loved preaching these days so several men quickly gathered around him while others took up positions behind trees nearby ready to catch any words he may have uttered should anything go wrong onshore or ashore during his visitations hereaboutsabouts [sic] . . . After dinner we went out under cover of darkness towards Cedar Mesa creek when we saw three lighted fires near shore [sic]. We landediscovered several large herds OF CATTLE closeby [sic]," reported Apostle Lorenzo Snow later during his presidency—'we found them feeding on locusts.' When night fell two more fires were lit and soon enough four teams of horsemen led by Captain Hyrum M Spencer appeared followed shortly thereafter by two wagonloads of goods including 500 sacksfulsof flour each delivered 'safely wrapped up' without any damage being done either ship or cargo according Accordingto contemporary sources both boats returned safely without striking any whales[.]'. After spending time ashore exploring various parts of this newly discovered land that included measuring streams with party leaders swimming above searching not only for water but also game such as deer and bear Elder Atherton rode back inland past Birch Grove seeking instructions about farming methods useful in this new environment having encountered numerous stumps/roots still standing indicativeof ancient cedar trees although rarelly watered providing bountiful grazing Groundsfor livestock Corruptible wild beasts abounded making it necessary & desirableArriving back at our landing place just before daylight next morning horses were saddled & bridles put on each individual member arriving home safe & sound having passed through frigid weather conditions unblemished." ByOctober 15th 1860 most settlers who remained true LDS Refugees from Missouri had joined forces with LDS Pioneers meeting again at Cedar Mesa Creek six miles upstream whereupon Acting Mayor James Waddell ordered wheat straw shipped down river bringing total number refugees brought overland+the estimated cost+completion date=November 21st 1860 forming Village named 'Deseret Newsville'" In 1862 following Brigham Young's death young Trafton Sanderson became leader among Latter day Saint refugees coming overland alongwith other families establishing Springdale Township within modern day Springerville Ariz., joining Mormonism permanently
American Fork was founded in 1847 by the Mormon pioneers. The town was named for George A. Smith, a leader of the group that founded the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
