The Coast Guard in Wylie, Texas was founded on December 8, 1918. The first Patrolman was George A. Reeves. At that time the Coast Guard consisted of just a few men and their boats. The firstrants were given to those who helped stop ships from entering or leaving America’s ports. In 1933, the Coast Guard purchased its first motorboat and began patrolling our waters for illegal fishing vessels. In 1941, the Coast Guard purchased its first vessel “Plymouth” which served as a search and rescue boat until it was destroyed by fire in 1984. On May 1st, 1945, Captain John Crammond assumed command of the Coast Guards Department in Wylie after serving with distinction as Commandant of the 3rd District at Galveston Bayou (now Houston Ship Channel). He soon realized that there were too many missions requiring his attention to continue running patrols exclusively out of Galveston Bayou; he therefore proceeded to purchase two additional patrol vessels- USS Constitution (CG-4) and USS Ponce (LPD-1). These new assets would become known as the “Wylie Patrolmen” because they patrolled our waters from Corpus Christi Island to Brownsville Island near downtown Wylie. Captain Crammonds also developed a close relationship with then Mayor J Gorman which resulted in several honorary appointments including membership in both the Texas State Board of Health and American Legion Post #5758. This friendship would continue until Captain Crammond’s death on January 25th, 1969 due to pneumonia caused by an infection contracted while deployed aboard USS Constitution (CG-4) during Operation Neptune Spear when Singapore became involved in World War II. It is interesting to note that not one but TWO Governors called on Captain Crammond during his tenure as Commandant; Governor Richard M Ladd called upon him for advice concerning matters concerning local law enforcement officers engaged in criminal activity within their jurisdiction; while Governor James Fenton requested Captains permission to board enemy submarines operating off Waco TX while they were attempting underwater tows for recovery efforts following Hurricane Ike on September 15th, 2008! In 1976Captain Russel Bendix relieved Captains Crammond and Phelps after only 6 months on duty due to health problems brought about by exposure to Agent Orange while stationed aboard USS Constitution CG-2 during Vietnam Era protests against US military involvement Thereafter Captains Wehnerand Pohl took over primary duties usually reserved for Lieutenants or Ensigns currently serving aboard another ship or unit afloat concurrently with their respective commands ashore! On October 30th 1978 Acting Commander Denton made history when he became the FIRSTMARINE CHIEF COAST GUARD FORCES OPERATIONS CENTER - COMMANDANT OF THE WYLOE PATROLMEN! This position had been vacant since November 14th 1975 when Commodore Harry H Baer resigned effective upon his retirement from active service due to ill health following service with USCG Miami Zodiac helicopter detachment during tight water conditions off Florida Keys area associated with Hurricane Tomas! After nearly 10 yearscommanding this unique entity Assistant Chief Staff Sergeant Thomas S Sands assuming command effective November 4th 1985 until his retirement effective February 15th 1992!! Sandals will be remembered as one of longest tenured members ever appointed/serving consecutively WITH COAST GUARD OFFICE IN WYLIEE!!!
