The history of Wichita Falls begins with James W. Howlett who arrived in 1885 from Stockbridge, Massachusetts with his brother John Howlett, who had located there earlier that year while working for The Western Union Telegraph Company's steamboat service along the Arkansas River. They named their new town "Howlett" after themselves and set about building a rail depot for their company which would serve as a base of operations for their business ventures throughout what is now Hutchinson County and parts of Wise County northward into Baylor County on either side of Interstate 35E (now I-35W). Howlett served as editor/publisher of The Wichita Falls Enterprise from 1888 until 1889 when he resigned due to health concerns caused by typhoid fever contracted during his editorship; this illness left him permanently impaired both mentally and physically which required him to use a wheelchair for most public activities thereafter until his death in 1902 at age 73 years old following five years thereof spent convalescing at home surrounded only by family members who cared for him].
