The Wichita Falls National Guard was organized on November 15, 1907. The first commander of the guard was Maj. Julius B. Prather. It was under his command that the Wichita Falls National Guard became a military department on January 1, 1912. On July 12, 1916, the National Guard disbanded and its assets were transferred to the War Department. In 1939, it re-emerged as an all-volunteer force with headquarters in Wichita Falls. The unit saw active duty in World War II and served at various camps across Texas until 1946 when it was disbanded again for lack of volunteers. After the war, the guard resumed its all-volunteer status and formed a battalion of cavalry which served until 1961 when it became part of the Army Reserve Force. The guard has been inactive since then but still exists as a ceremonial organization attached to various organizations including city halls and other government buildings throughout Wichita Falls County

The first national guard units were called the Continental Army, but they were not actually raised until 1775. The first unit to serve in battle was on September 11th, 1775, when patriot General George Washington led a force against British forces at Saratoga Battlefield. National Guard units fought in many battles during the Revolutionary War and afterward. In 1815, Congress passed a bill authorizing the president to call out any state or local militia for up to three months to suppress insurrection or participate in suppressing slave rebellions. This law was eventually repealed by President James K Polk in 1846 because it proved too difficult for states to call out their militiamen when necessary. At this time, most states had adopted militia laws that allowed civilians (such as landlords) to exercise police powers within their own neighborhoods without suspicion of being involved in rebellion or terrorism. During World War II, over 125 million Americans served in the military—the largest mobilization in American history.
