In Wichita Falls, there has been anArmy gift history that goes back to the time when the city was named Fort Worth. The first Army barracks in Wichita Falls were built in 1903 and served as a training ground for World War I troops. After World War I, the Fort Worth Brigade of the Texas Army National Guard moved into the Wichita Falls Barracks and continued operations until 1922. In 1924, the Wichita Falls Chamber of Commerce donated land to be used as an Armybase park. The base was renamed Camp Hood after General George Custer who died in 1876 during the Indian Wars. Camp Hood served as a military installation until it was closed in 1952 due to budget cuts by then-President Harry S Truman. It reopened in 1954 as Eisenhower Memorial Park and remains open to this day as one ofFort Worth’s largest tourist attractions. After Fort Worth’s closure, Republic Services Corporation (RSC) took over operation of Camp Hood and later Ft Sam Houston State University opened its gates atCamp Hood on November 15th, 1969 which housed all United States Military Academy cadets from both Texas A&M University & USMA while their academy buildings were being renovated for use by RSC. On May 3rd 1978 RSC sold Ft Sam Houston State University to Lone Star College System which changed its name to Southern Methodist University on October 26th 1990 following a merger between SMU and Dallas Baptist College As one of Southern Methodist University’s flagship campuses, FMUSAMC continues to offer undergraduate students access to world-renowned graduate programs including law, business administration, medicine/health sciences, engineering and science/math/computer technology education opportunities along with professional studies opportunities through its many international partnerships.FMUSAMC is also home to The Dowling Museum of Art which features rotating exhibitions of American art from pre-Revolutionary times until today including works by Frederic Remington & Edward Munch among others On July 1st 1998 FMUSAMC teamed up with nearby Baylor University's Main Campus - now Waco -to create Baylor Southwestern Medical Center serving patients from Lackland Air Force Base located withinWaco metropolitan area with plans for additional locations at North Richland Hills Airport and Temple Terrace Downtown should Waco becomeToo large for Baylor Southwestern Medical Center or Randolph AFB within commuting distance
