Waxahachie, Texas is a town located in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Waxahachie was founded by settlers from Illinois in 1879 and incorporation as a town took place on November 15, 1880. The name of the first post office in Waxahachie was Fenton. In 1907, the town had a population of 2,000 and it annexed the neighboring community of Selma on February 5 that year. Waxahachie became an independent city on July 1, 1909. The history of Waxahachie can be traced back to 1879 when some Illinoisans settled down in what is now Hudspeth County and started to farm land east of Fort Worth. They named their new village after General Hullam Smith who led American forces during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). In 1880s local citizens decided that they wanted their own Post Office so they pooled resources to erect a wooden building with three rooms which served as an office until 1911 when an addition gave rise to four more rooms and became known as “The Brick House” because bricks were used for mortar instead of stone or wood at that time. During World War II many soldiers stationed in TXFHQ (the Army's chemical warfare headquarters) ate at The Brick House which also served as Headquarters Cafeteria for troops stationed around Dallas/Fort Worth area including Waxahachie; those soldiers are buried there today along with other members of TXFHQ during World War II. After the war ended many Soldiers/ civilians moved into waxahachee and Selma but no one knows how many people lived there before 1910 because even then there wasn't any Census taken! There must have been quite a few people living here because Selma had 3 stores & 100 residents when it annexed Waxahachie! Even though Selma only had 350 residents when it annexed Waxahachie it still played an important role in our community's history because its store continued serving residents until 1951! At that time we lost our store but we didn't give up our traditions! We continue having friendly debates about what kind of beans we should serve dinner with tonight sinceSelma never got anything done! For years we've been debating about whether or not to open up another store so keep your eyes peeled for us cause we're definately thinking about giving waxaachaichies another try big time!
