The Texas Air National Guard's 144th Fighter Wing, the Waxahachie-based squadrons of the 157th Fighter Squadron and the 158th Fighter Squadron are all part of The Flying Fortress Museum in Wichita, Kansas. The museum is open to the public every day from 9am to 5pm from May 1 through October 30. There are regular displays on various interesting Air Force aircraft from World War II to present day. One of the most popular exhibits at The Flying Fortress Museum is "The Heritage of American Aviation," which tells the story of how American aviation has shaped society and carried out its role in world events since World War II. This exhibit features more than 100 Flight Models representing a variety of Aircraft types including P-51 Mustangs, B-17s, F-86Fs, A-10s and KC-135s. Model airplanes can be seen takeoff and landing from hangars on location around Wichita as well as being displayed in realistic cockpit conditions. There are also several collection areas which include memorabilia related to air force pilots such as uniforms, helmets and other equipment. These areas also have displays on aircraft models with authentic restoration or rebuilds done by experts at The Flying Fortress Museum. In addition there is a large airbase model that shows how Wichita Airport looks today when compared to when it was first opened in 1938.

The name "Waxahachie" comes from the Wichita term "waxaca," meaning "a kind of cornmeal." In 1904, Waco Oil Corporation established an oil refinery here and named its production Waxahachie after it. The town's nickname, referring to its location on both banks of the Pecos River, has stuck ever since. The first post office in Waxahachie opened in 1881 and served until 1902. Its first official settlers were local farmers who arrived during the early days of Fort Worth's growth as a commercial center following Texans' admission to statehood in 1836. By 1840, several thousand people lived within three miles (5 km) of what would become Waxahachie proper; most were farmers or ranch hands living near military posts around Fort Worth or Athens Barracks on Easton Road near present-day Lamar Boulevard and I-635E/M-65E exits (the then Fayette Street).
