The history of the navy in Universal City, Texas dates back to 1853 when a group of investors organized the Houston Navy Yard. The first ship built at the yard was the USS Constitution, which sailed from Galveston on July 4, 1853. The navyyard remained active until 1898 when it closed due to financial problems.
In 1951, a new navyyard was opened in San Antonio and soon became one of the most important employers in town. Shipbuilding continued until 1992 when commercial vessels took over and the navy yard closed again. Currently, there is onlyActive Naval Shipyards - Corpus Christi (Navy) located in San Antonio that produces naval vessels for both civilian and military use.
Each year during Memorial Day Weekend there is an event called "Naval Days." This weekend features various activities related to naval history such as walking tours of the yards, displays and concerts throughout the weekend, as well as several exhibits about navy history andthe maritime industry in Universal City. The post-World War II boomtown was founded by farmers in 1927 as Universal City Beach on the shores of Mission Bayou. In 1949, it became an incorporated town when San Antonio annexed it into its city limits; and in 1957, it became a part of Austin with the merge of five other towns within Austin's boundaries: Berryessa, Clear Lake, Cypress Hills, Humble Park, and Lamar Heights.
The oil industry declined after the turn of the century but has been revived over recent years with new drilling operations off shore in Corpus Christi and Galveston counties. Oil production peaked in 2002 but has since trended downward; however, gas production remains high because of hydraulic fracturing (fracking).

One of the earliest manifestations of the navy was when sailors from ships in Portsmouth, England, in 1615 manned a small boat to raided Spanish shipping off Long Island. Universal City, Texas is a city located in the U.S. state of Texas and has a population of over 530,000 as of 2018. The city was founded on October 1, 1857 by John P. Austin with the name Universal City after the first international exposition held in that year in Paris, France. The site for the future city was purchased by General James K. Polk from José Maria Morelos in 1856 and construction began on May 24, 1861; it was completed on November 1, 1867. In 1907, Universal City became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and six councilmen elected at-large to serve five-year terms; it adopted a charter providing for unlimited growth within its boundaries without voter approval or consent through annexation into other municipalities or counties. On July 26, 2009, the City Council passed an ordinance amending its charter to make universalcity an unicameral government with three mayoral seats instead of six councilmen and one mayor who presides over all actions taken by the municipal body.

The 21st Century Downtown Plan also includes new light rail Transit Oriented Development (TOD) streetcar stops at Westheimer Road and Columbus Boulevard which will provide easy access to downtown businesses from surrounding neighborhoods including Midtown Houston and Montrose Park
