The city of Universal City, Texas was founded in 1871 by James H. Carothers and his wife, Lillie. It became a part of the United States in 1912. The city is located in the Rio Grande Valley region of Texas and is the county seat for Hudspeth County. Universal City has a population of around 97,000 people as of 2010.Universal City was one of the first cities to be built in what is now the Rio Grande Valley region of Texas. The area had beenSeminole Indian territory since before European settlement began. In 1827, Mexican soldiers arrived in what is now Universal City and proclaimed it as a military post under the name "San Juan de Taos."In 1871, James H. Carothers and his wife, Lillie, set out to found a new town on land they had purchased from the Seminole Indians. They named their new town after Montresor (the Swiss general who defeated Napoleon at Waterloo).Lillie died during her initial stay in Universal City; however, James continued to live there until his death in 1888. After James' death, Lillie's widow continued to live there with her son-in-law Joseph Pemberton until her death in 1902.After Lillie's death, much debate arose over who should take on responsibility for running and maintainingUniversal City—an issue that persists to this day. A committee formed by Mayor John Fenton recommended that control pass from Mrs. Pemberton's son-in-law to an organization known as the Improvement Association; however, this proposal was never implemented due to funding constraints at the time. In 1908, Mayor White appointed Mr.—later Sir John Sayce—to manage Universal City affairs as head of governmental services while he provided additional leadership and direction through grants from state government toward improvement projects within the community center complex which included schools and parks.]Sir John Sayce served into World War I before retiring JFenton established himself as mayor once again following World War I Mr.—now Sir John Sayce—returned effective January 1st 1920 with full authority over all aspects civic life including municipal finances]Sir John Sayce left office on December 31st 1923 having led UniversalCity through some tough times but also making many important strides such as establishing municipally owned health clinics.]When Harry Chandler took office as Mayor on January 1st 1929 he immediately made headlines when he announced plans for universal water service throughout Hudspeth County]Chandler quickly declared victory over charges that he would Privately finance universal water service]Chandethis announcement resulted in heated public meetings where citizens voiced their concerns about how such a financial commitment would be handled]Mayor Chandler eventually agreed to privately fund water service but maintained full control over all civic operations]'On July 3rd 1933 Harry Chandler resigned from officefollowing revelations that he had accepted bribes from local businessmen while serving as Mayor
The area now known as Universal City, Texas was first settled by the Tejas Indian tribe in the late 18th century. The area became part of the United States after Mexican independence from Spain in 1821. In 1836, General Antonio López de Santa Anna led a Mexican army against American forces at San Jacinto, which resulted in U.S. victory and the admission of Mexico to the Union as a country. As part of this new country, Universal City became one of its many settlements. In 1907, Universal City received its own post office, which continued to serve until it closed in 1963. In 1936, Universal City was chosen as the site for what would become Midland's first movie theater complex - The Orthopedic Theater Company Movie House II. The complex remained operational until it was demolished in 1984.Universal City also saw some local activity during World War II; on July 30, 1945, members of the 2nd Battalion (2nd Marines) 9th Marinesanchored onto USS Lexington (LST-606) offshore near Point Conception and staged an amphibious landing onshore for Operation Neptune's Spear - a misdirection operation meant to prevent enemy intelligence from learning about Allied plans for invading Japan
