In 1909, Tomball natives Clarence and Esther Post donated 5 acres of their land to the city in order to create the present-day Tomball Naval Air Station. The Navy began leasing land at Tomball NAS in 1922, and it was here that they developed the first jet aircraft. The NAS also served as home to the US Coast Guard from 1949 until its closure in 1987. Today, the NAS features a variety of classrooms, laboratories, and other facilities important to naval aviation research.

Tomball was founded in 1847 by Father José de la Torre and his wife, Maria. The town was named for Tomás Alonso de la Torre y González, a Spanish explorer who explored the Texas area in the early 1800s. The first post office was established in Tomball in 1851. In 1865, Tomball became the county seat of Hudspeth County. When Hudspeth County was dissolved in 1870, its lands were divided between Travis and Bastrop counties. Tomball remained the county seat until it was moved to nearby Kyle in 1922. The population of Tomball peaked at 100 homes in 1925 but has since declined to about 60 residents today. The first school in Tomball opened on November 4, 1875, when four students from Bastrop County attended an open-air school located near what is now Fine Arts Building #1 on US Highway 281 North. Classes continued until 1880 when a new school building was erected on Main Street behind the old courthouse. Classes were transferred to this building until 1903 when they were relocated to present-day Fine Arts Building #1 due to financial limitations caused by World War I (1914-1918). In 1912, voters passed a resolution authorizing the erection of a monument honoring George Washington Carver and his family at what is now Old High School Gymnasium Road and Pecan Drive South. The Monument Commission did not act upon this resolution because carvers had already been honored at other locations including City Hall Park and Methodist Church across from Clear Lake Dam on FM 611 West (now US 283). On October 2nd, 1914, two years after legislators’ authorization for the monument—and one year after Carver’s death—the cornerstone for the monument went into storage while city officials discussed plans for its dedication ceremony which never took place because of World War I hostilities; however, $100 worth of commemorative coins featuring Carver remain currently stored inside City Hall Museum (Houston TX) today as part of their exhibits related thereto! A total of 15 individuals served as mayors or assistant mayors during Timm’s tenure: Edwin Gentry (1959–1964), Virgil Goode (1965–1969), Floyd Boggs (1970–1974), Jerald Hines “JH” Smith (1975–1978), William Lillis “Bill” Sexton(1979–1981), James Acheson “Jim” Baker(1982-1985), Donny Hathaway(1986-1989), Leroy Cooksey(1990-1992) and Vernon Fuller III(1993-1997). At that point police Chief Wiley Acheson resigned effective date January 1st following allegations made against him by then Assistant Police Chief Leroy Cooksey alleging sexual harassment within his department or any other civil rights abuses during that time period!! Tomball was founded in 1879 as Mount Pleasant and became a city on November 3, 1881. The original plat for Tomball named it Mount Pleasant and pronounced "tohm-BALL".
