The Texas Marine Museum in Texarkana, Texas has a rich marine history dating back to the early 1800s. The town owes its start to three men who pooled their resources to build a trading post on the banks of the Arkansas River in 1836. They named it after Texarkana, Texas, then a part of Mexico City. The post lasted for only two years before being destroyed by Indian attacks. In 1838, John Wesley Powell discovered and mapped the Colorado River and named it for this site - Texarkana being one of his discoveries. Texarkana grew rapidly during the early 20th century as oil production began to increase in Texas and other states east of the Mississippi River. By 1930, it had become one of America's leading oil towns with over 100 businesses active in manufacturing and services related to oil production or trade. However, during World War II Texarkana became an important military hub with components for many American aircraft factories like Consolidated Aircraft Corporation (later Boeing) and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. After V-E Day, most industry shut down as war ended; however some growth resumed when peace returned but no new investments came from outside investors so support for local businesses slowly eroded throughout the late 21st century until they were completely wiped out by economic recession which began in 2008/2009
