Texarkana is a city in Texas, United States. The population was 939 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Smith County. Texarkana was founded by prospectors in 1881 and became a town in 1903. The city was named after Texarkana, Arkansas, which was then part of the Union Pacific Railroad network. The first permanent settler in Texarkana was James Bledsoe, who arrived with his family on October 10, 1881 from Illinois. In 1886, John Waddell moved to Texarkana and began operating a general store and stage line out of his home on Second Street. The town's first school was built in 1902 on Fourth Street by local parents Mrs. Averill Huggins (1860-1941) and Mr. Jno Crampton (1863-1936).
