The history of the Navy in Sulphur Springs, Texas dates back to 1848. As early as 1847, a group of men from Sulphur Springs formed the Sulphur Springs Naval Militia Company to provide defense against Indian attacks. The company was disbanded in 1849, but it was re-established in 1850 and continued to exist until 1861. In 1861, the Navy moved from Fort Worth to Saline County and began operations at the new Saline Barracks. In 1865, the navy moved again and this time settled at Corpus Christi Naval Station. The navy remained at Corpus Christi Naval Station until 1971 when it relocated to Galveston Bay Naval Base. At Galveston Bay Naval Base, the navy conducted tasks such as weather monitoring, enforcement of maritime law, harbor patrols, and naval exercises. From Galveston Bay Naval Base through 1998, the navy exercised jurisdiction over waters within Municipality 5 (Galveston County) including Houston Ship Channel and Port Arthur Harbor. Today’s navy has a rich history that is rooted in sacrifice and service. The present day navy is composed of more than 4500 Sailors who serve proudly with distinction across 27 states across three oceans–the United States of America; Great Britain; Canada; and Australia Sulphur Springs is one of only a few towns in Texas that still boasts an active military garrison dating back to before statehood Since its establishment in 1850 as a naval station on Galveston Bayou outside of Galveston City Limits – which later became Municipality 5 – the Navy has played an important role in contributing materially (euphemistically called defense) both domestically & abroad Municipalities located within Municipality 5 have been responsible for providing essential services such as public works & engineering while also hosting various types of military installations including: Corpus Christi Naval Station (& successor Joint Expeditionary Force Headquarters), Galveston Bay Naval Base (& successor Maritime Command Headquarter), Houston Ship Channel &Port Arthur Harbor . As recently as 1998 - following years of attrition due primarily to budget cuts - all remaining naval facilities were transferred from Admiralty Islands Marine Corps Air Unit(AIMCU) Garrison Facility on San Pedro Island(Laguna Beach) into newly created Veterans Affairs Medical Center leasehold property adjacent thereto ..... Although now long past their original expiration date , these assets remain significant if not unique among municipally owned assets currently available for redevelopment or reuse

The Sulphur Springs Naval Air Station (SSNAP) is a decommissioned naval air station in the city of Sulphur Springs, Texas. It was established as an airfield in 1942 and was active until it was closed by the Navy in 1969. The SSNAP is now used as a municipally owned park.
Sulphur Springs is a small, unincorporated community in Cooke County, Texas, United States. The population was 557 at the 2010 census. Sulphur Springs is located on the eastern border of Cooke County and is east of the creek that forms its namesake. It has a post office, which opened in 1901, and an agricultural store. The Sulphur Springs Creek was named for the sulfurous odor it produces from its many springs. The first white person to live in Sulphur Springs was James C. Herrington, who came to do business with local farmers in 1892. In 1905 Jules Bledsoe settled here and started a grocery store that became one of the most important businesses in Sulphur Springs until it closed in 1985. In the early 1900s, oil Rigging Company employees built a sawmill on their property near present-day Sulphur Springs to supply their own Sawmill Row mill with lumber they produced from nearby timbered hillsides. This mill continued production until 1910 when it burned down due to arson by some of its workers; this mill left a lasting mark on Sulphur Springs as one of its earliest industrial buildings and remains one of only two remaining functioning sawmills still operating within Cooke County today (the other being operated by Brushy Bay Lumber). After World War II ended there were several waves of immigrants coming into Cooke County looking for new opportunities: Italians, Poles, Slovaks and Greeks all choosed Cooke County over more accessible areas such as Dallas or Houston because it had more job openings after the war than any other area in Texas thanks to government contracts meant specifically for these groups of immigrants (such as construction work GI's received following World War II). As jobs dried up post-war America became increasingly competitive so did wages throughout much of America with manufacturing jobs going offshore while service jobs stayed put; this motivated many Hispanics living northward along I-10 west of Dallas to settle here instead before Interstate 10 ever crossed into Cooke Countyline
