The early years were difficult for the small community as they struggled to find enough men to patrol their streets and protect their citizens. In 1886, Captain Moffitt's son-in-law, John A. Shuler offered to donate a horse and buggy service to Stephenville for $5 per week. This service helped provide basic needs such as food and transportation for the citizens. By 1912, Stephenville had developed into a successful town with its own police department and well-developed social system. It was during this time that one of its most prominent residents, Judge J C Berryman donated an 80-horsepower engine used by the sheriff's department to keep up with new demands from the population growth around him. In 1926, Sheriff Clarence Bledsoe donated a carillon bellowed by a steam locomotive to help herald morning announcements from his office on Main Street until it was replaced by an electronic announcement system in 1978. During World War II, Sergeant First Class Leroy Heston donated two pieces of artillery equipment - a howitzer and an observation post cannon - which were used against Japanese forces near Stephenville on March 8th 1944 . The original switchbacks along US 146 led from Interstate 10 south to town until they were replaced by new freeways that crossed I-10 just north of town between 1949 and 1955. As more people moved into towns throughout Williamson County during this time period, Stephensville lost itseminence as an agricultural center but continued to grow as a bedroom community for larger towns nearby like Tyler and Abilene. With growth came sports stadiums for football (Stephenville Memorial Stadium) and baseball (Canyon High School), retail development including several supermarkets, conversions of churches into apartments/condosand homebuilders' constructionborghining properties such as Country Club Hill.
