When Seagoville, Texas was first settled in 1851, it was a small town of just over 100 people. The town was named for the Spanish word seagoing, meaning "to take leave." By 1870, Seagoville had grown to over 1000 residents and had become a busy seaport on the Texas Gulf Coast. The town's most prominent figure during its early years was Captain James A. Fenton, who served as the Town Marshal and Mayor from 1851 to 1861. In 1875, Captain Fenton's son-in-law Colonel James P. Henshaw purchased the entire block bounded by Commerce Street on the south side of US Highway 80 east of downtown Seagoville, and General Store heirs Edward Swayne and John Waddell located on that block also bought additional land east of Main Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue in 1886. This area became known as "The Annex". It is said that Colonel Henshaw's purchase set off a bidding war among local merchants for control of what would become one of the largest inland ports in America. In 1902 when US 8 Alternate (now I-10) crossed through Seagoville into Houston County from San Augustine County, Judge John Ewart donated land along Commerce Street to create what is now Veterans Memorial Park north of downtown Seagoville. That donation effectively annexed much of what is now Interstate 10 east of downtown Seagoville toSeagoville limits in 2002 when I-10 crossed through Seagovville into Houston County. In honor of Judge Ewart's gift and in commemoration of his long service toSeagOVILLE residents and businesses, an annual holiday Contest has been held at Veterans Memorial Park since 2002 with proceeds going towards charities such as Special Olympics Texas which helps kids with physical disabilities

Seagoville is a small town in Vernon County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,661 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The community was founded by fishermen who found fertile ground for agriculture on the mouth of the Rio Grande. The first post office was established in 1876. In 1906, Seagoville added a school and began to grow as a rural community with several stores, churches, and schools. In 1960, Seagoville became an incorporated town when it annexed the unincorporated communities of North Little Elm and Slaughtertown from Vernon County. It had a population of 2,262 as of 2000. In 2002-03, Seagoville experienced active violence that left four people dead and dozens injured after some residents used fireworks to celebrate New Year's Eve celebrations without permits or adult supervision outside their homes. The following year saw another series of shootings that resulted in two fatalities and thirteen injuries; these were considered acts of terror within the community because they came just days before Christmas Eve holiday season when many families were preparing to celebrate togetherences with loved ones
