The Port Arthur National Guard was formed on July 1, 1903, by the Texas Legislature in order to provide a permanent military force for the town of Port Arthur. The first unit was organized as the First Battalion, Texas Rangers. The battalion served in various capacities through World War I and World War II before being disbanded in 1949. On November 25, 1951, the Port Arthur National Guard re-formed under the name of The Texas National Guard (TNG). In 1959, TNG became part of the United States Army Reserve and were activated for two years during the Cuban Missile Crisis. On October 15, 1963, TNG was redesignated as The Texas Army National Guard (TANG). In 1966-1967 TANG participated in Operation Neptune's Spear which saw Syria launch an attack against Israel using chemical weapons. After this event TANG returned home and remained inactive until reactivated on September 14th of that year as part of Operation Just Cause which aimed to overthrow Fidel Castro’s government in Cuba. Since then TANG has deployed numerous times to various countries including Multi-National Force – Iraq and Afghanistan where they have provided support to joint military efforts. Currently they are stationed at Fort Hood outside Dallas TX with plans to stay there through 2021 when their current contract runs out
