Plano was founded in 1872 by Major General Sam Houston, who named it for his home town of Limestone, Alabama. The city’s location on the Red River made it a natural site for growth and trade. By 1907, Plano had become one of the largest cities in Texas. In 1915, Plano became the capital of Texas and has since been the state’s most populous city. The city is known for its shopping malls, large stadiums (including NRG Stadium), and its major industries including oil production and agricultural processing. The metropolitan area includes a population of 1 million people and covers an area of 232 square miles (664 square kilometers).
In 1836, the Republic of Texas was founded by a group of Texans who were angered by Mexican rule. The new nation was named for General Sam Houston, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and had pledged his support to the United States. The nucleus of what would become Plano is today’s north side of town. The first settlers in Plano arrived in 1837 and soon started trading with Native Americans and selling goods they produced on the frontier. In 1840, John Fenton built a log cabin near present day Plano Center on what is now Hwy 183. Fenton became one of the first farmers in the area and used his land to grow corn, beans, potatoes and other vegetables until he sold it off in 1865. In 1849, J.P. Morgan organized a group of investors to start developing logs on the Brazos River for export to China as railroad construction began nearby. By 1850, many businesses had been established around Plano Center including retail stores such as Weis & Wirth (now Wells Fargo), Mercantile Exchange Building (later First National Bank) and Masonic Temple (the only building still standing from that time). In 1851, J.M Page opened up Page’s grocery store at 221 Neches Rd., which remains open today as one of Plano’s oldest businesses still in business! In 1863, Moody & Ward opened their mercantile store at 611 S Harwood Ave., which would later become Moody’s Discount Store #1! In 1871 local lawyer John Pemberton erected a three-story brick building on McKinney Road known as The Pemberton House after himself and fellow lawyer James Kenedy purchased it from Mr. Pemberton! On November 2nd 1870 – during an election held to fill a seat vacated by Judge Augustus Cox – Driscoll McAllister won election as Mayor over incumbent George WOODS!! At this point plano became an incorporated municipality with its own government!!!
