The Plano, Texas Army Garrison was founded in 1881 and has served the community since. The Garrison is a historic district which includes 139 buildings dating back to the 1860s. One of the earliest installations at the Army Garrison was Fort Sam Houston, which was manned by Confederate troops during the Civil War. After the war, Fort Sam Houston became a military prison and later an arsenal. It was decommissioned in 1907 and its materials were used to build Fort Worth State School on Westheimer Road in 1909.
