Pearland is a city in Brazoria County, Texas, United States. The population was 586 at the 2010 census. Pearland is located on the Clear Fork of the Brazos River, about 30 miles (48 km) east of Houston and 60 miles (96 km) southeast of Dallas. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land Metropolitan Statistical Area. Founded by freed slaves in 1836 as "New Market", Pearland became a black town after white slaveowners moved their operations to nearby Friendswood in 1849. In 1872, Pearland's first store opened and within two years it had become one of the most important commercial centres for African Americans in Texas. The post office was established here in 1877 and soon became an important center for black education and social services. The early cotton plantations near present-day Pearland were abandoned during Reconstruction due to military occupation and economic hardship; however, new cotton plantations began upriver fromFriendswood beginning in the late 19th century. By 1920, over 90% of the civilian population was African American; many businesses were founded or grew out of this community spirit including several major Negro newspapers: "Houston Chronicle" (1885-1946), "New Orleans Afro-American" (1889-1950), "Birmingham News" (1920-present), "Dallas Times Herald" (1925-2005), and its successor publications: "The Daily Texan" (1985-) and "Galveston Press". A number of large Baptist churches also flourished during this period including First Baptist Church which still stands today as one of Pearson’s most striking cultural landmarks; Second Baptist Church built 1888 known today as Temple Evelyn; Methodist Episcopal Zion Church built 1915 now functions as an arts centre called “Pasadena Playhouse”; First Presbyterian Church also built 1915 now functions as a museum called “Old Friends Chapel”). During World War II, pearling took on increased importance due to wartime shortages of seafood items such as tuna fish that could be replaced with other products such as Pearl Harbor being bombed without causing significant damage.Pearland prospered economically until 1966 when Hurricane Ike caused widespread devastation across much of Texas including much destruction to homes and businesses along with loss of life both human and property damage from flooding combined with crop failures resulting from excessive rainfall caused by Ike - making it one among many cities around coastal Texas particularly impacted that year by what has come to be known collectively as The Great Houston Flooding event/. Many people lost their homes outright while others experienced complete destruction or lossy replacement thereof - leading some residents to refer to themselves informally rather than formally identifying themselves with any specific municipality throughout that dreadful time period dubbed simply “The floods” despite continuing physical evidence remaining documenting otherwise parallel events taking place concurrently within city limits throughout various neighborhoods across downtown/Central Business District area comprising then entire Houston local government boundaries subject thereto namely Butts Avenue southward into northwest Harris County boundary forming then southwest corner thereof between Spring Street eastward visiting thence northeasterly along said butts avenue back infield onto Main Street rejoining Spring Street whereupon said main street again crossed Baton Rouge Road proceeding northerly thence via State Highway 621 easterly theretovia IH 10W arrive at then original site location aforesaid--all National Guard troops having been ordered therein under General Order No 1 dated 4/1/1966 Just prior thereto."
