The Pearland, Texas area was populated by Native Americans for over 10,000 years. The earliest European settlers in the area were the Comanche and Kiowa people. The area was first explored by Spanish explorers in the 15th century and it wasn't until the late 18th century that a land grant was given to John Whitehead, an American Revolutionary War veteran, who named his tract of land after himself. In 1836, Pearland was founded as a town on Whitehead's ranch by his families. The town grew rapidly due to its location at the mouth of the Brazos River and its timber industry. By 1860, Pearland had a population of around 1,500 people. It remained small throughout most of its history until it became an important center during the 19th century oil boom in Texas. During this time, pearls (a type of seafood) became a popular commodity because of their scarcity outside of Europe. As oil prices increased in the 1920s and 30s, pearls became more valuable and pearling began to grow more popular in Texas. In 1933, Pearland merged with nearby Richmond to form one large city called Houston Heights.
