Coffee has been a part of the Mission community for over 100 years. The first coffee shops started up in the early 1800s, and by 1860, there were more than 20 businesses serving coffee in the town. The history of coffee is intertwined with that of the missionaries who have helped spread Christianity throughout South Texas. Coffee was first brought to Mission by Spanish missionaries in 1823. In 1847, Father José de la Garza founded San José de Asís, which served as the first mission in Missions County. Cofee became an important part of San José's religious life and economy. Mission's rich history has been reflected in its institutions and culture. The University of Texas at Austin is one of several universities located in Mission; it was founded here in 1916 as UT Austin College of Technology after Mexican students fled into Texas to escape persecution by their Spanish oppressors. In addition, many restaurants and hotels are named formissionaries or local saints such as Ignacio López y Tejada (founder/director of Máximo Radio), Francisco Ortiz (founder/director of El Rancho Grande), José Gomez Caballero (founder/director of La Paz Social Club), Manuel García Márquez (writer and Nobel Prize laureate) and Antonio Machado (pupil at UTAustin).

Mission's first coffee house, The Coffee House, opened its doors in 1872. In 1937 the original building burned down and was replaced by the current structure. In 1984 The Coffee House closed its doors for good and was replaced by The Mission Roastery.
Mission, Texas is a small town in the Midwestern United States. It was founded by Brothers James and John Hennigan in 1836 as an agricultural settlement on the banks of the Rio Grande. The name comes from Latin "mission" (from missione, meaning to come). The Hennigans were Apostolic Fathers who had traveled throughout Mexico and Central America proselytizing for the Christ movement. They arrived here in 1836 and began operations as missionaries, baptizing natives and teaching them Christianity. In 1837 they erected a church and started administering some aspects of local government. In 1840 they founded a school which became one of the leading schools in Texas. In 1845 Mission was renamed Fort Worth after General Sam Houston's victory over Mexican forces at San Jacinto. Some years later it became part of the Republic of Texas under President James Kenedy. As part of that state's efforts to become an American state, it lost its status as a missionary outpost but continued to maintain some vestige of its apostolic character until within recent decades it has been largely considered an ecclesiastical center for Hispania regionally based Catholics. Today Mission is home to about 1,500 people who are scattered among various churches and institutions including two hospitals; three schools; several businesses; two post offices; four restaurants; one library; one museum/gallery; four parks/ playgrounds; one water tower/ pumping Plant; two churches (of which one is now considered historical); five conventicles (Churches of Strict Observance) with resident sisters living cloistered together in separate convents near downtown - all without any public services or educational opportunities for its citizens other than religious instruction from parish priests assigned thereto jointly by their respective bishops - making this little-known second city in Texas only slightly larger than Austin proper!

Mission, Texas is a small town located in Kendall County, Texas. It was founded in 1836 by José Antonio de la Peña and his brother Francisco. The mission was the first of several missions established in what is now Kendall County. Mission San José de Magdalena served as the county seat from 1837 to 1840. The mission had a population of about 350 people when it closed its doors in 1840. The original church tower still stands today and can be seen from all over the town. In 1886, Mission nightclub opened in the old school building on Main Street. This building still stands and is used as the town library today. Mission died out after only a few years of operation due to lack of support from local officials and settlers alike. However, through hard work and determination, Mission has slowly but surely been reborn as an important community within Kendall County. Today, there are more than 1,000 residents living within the walls of Missiontownships!
Mission, Texas history began with the founding of San Antonio by Catholic missionaries in 1824. The mission was abandoned in 1836 and never reopened. From its beginning, Mission was a Presbyterian stronghold, with many of the early settlers being Presbyterians. In 1830, when Mexican President Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered all English-speaking Catholics to leave Mexico for fear that they would become informants for the French, many of these refugees moved to what is now Mission County. The original mission buildings still stand today and are open to visitors.
