The United States Army was founded in 1846, and the Mexican-American War began in 1847. The war resulted in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the war. In 1848, the Texas Rangers were established to fight Mexico. The Rangers were disbanded in 1861, but they were re-established in 1865 as a part of the Texas National Guard. In 1903, the Texas National Guard was reorganized into an army corps under General James Fenton. The army corps was decommissioned in 1961, but it was reactivated again on December 17th, 2001 as part of Operation Neptune's Spear. The army corps is currently inactive due to budget cuts. Mission, Texas is one of the most significant American towns in history. The town was founded by Father Francisco Javier de las Casas on November 16, 1736, as an agricultural and military outpost in what is now southern California. It soon became a center for religious and cultural activity in the San Antonio Missions District, which extended from present-day Tarrant County to eastern New Mexico. The missions were built to promote Christianity among the Indian populations living near them. The first mission was San Pedro de Atacama on October 25, 1735. Church services were held at Mission San José until 1827; then they were held at Mission Concepción until 1833. By 1800, there were thirteen missions in Texas; by 1830 there were twenty-two. The town of Mission grew rapidly around the missions and their associated churches and schools. In 1847–1848, Mexican forces captured Santa Anna's army at Palo Alto Creek while it was attacking General Sam Houston's army besieging Austin; as a result of this victory over Mexican forces and Santa Anna's captivity, Mission increased its population from 1,200 to 3,000 residents within a year or so of its founding. In 1849–1850 ranching operations began in the area surrounding the missions; Rancho Rinconada (later Rancho Dominguez) was granted to James Fenton by Governor Manuel Micheltorena on February 21, 1850. Fenton developed it into one of Texas' largest ranches with 4 million acres (16 km2). "Mission" became an official name for Texas after becoming part of United States on January 6th , 1861 during the American Civil War
