In the early 1800s, Mission was a small town in Texas. It was a stop on the Underground Railroad and a place where people could get food and shelter while they awaited their chance to escape slavery. At this time, mission had no military airport—the only one in TX was Schriever AFB near El Paso. With only two runways and little support from the Army or Navy, Combat Crew Training (CCT) operations were begun at Schriever AFB on October 25th 1951 by Col Ronald Saylor with participation from Tenth AF based at Lackland AFB TX Withdrawn Troops were used for CCT which eventually evolved into Advanced Attack Squadron Airmen (AAS) 847 which arrived May 1952 . After being activated at Lackland AFB Airmen flew training missions over San Antonio before arriving here Oct 1952 . Also during these months commanders LtCol Jack Bates 9th AFactivated 2nd Bombardment Wing (2 BW)Eagle Rock AB , concurrent with 1st Bombardment Wing maintaning its aircraft availability for combat duty when hostilities ended Sep Korean War

Mission, Texas was established in 1836 by Franciscan missionaries. The mission is located in present-day San Antonio, and is considered to be one of the most important missions in history. The Mission has been a source of religious instruction for many Texans and has helped to shape their culture. The original site for the Mission was a small ranch on the north side of San Antonio. The land that now makes up Mission was purchased by José de la Cruz y Bustamante from Alonso Coello de Herrera in 1837. In 1839, Father Francisco Garza founded the first school in San Antonio, which became known as "Garza School." From 1840 to 1850, the Mission operated four hospitals: one for women, one for children, and two for men. In 1851, Don Fernando Alarcón took over leadership of the Missions from Father Garza and began construction on what would become known as the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Construction began on November 3rd, 1851 and finished on December 6th, 1861. The Basilica served as both a place where people could come together to pray and also as a symbol of Spanish colonialism in Southwestern America. It is now used as a cathedral museum. During World War II (1939-1945), much effort was put into building airfields around San Antonio so that Allied bombers could hit German targets within city limits without risking civilian casualties or damage to property inside the city itself. One such airfield was Illingworth Field which housed three thousand acres (1 km²) including runways and buildings—the largest single piece of military infrastructure built outside North America during World War II. After 1945, Illingworth Field fell into disrepair but was eventually leased back to San Antonio Municipal Airport Ltd., who operates it today as an airport with scheduled passenger service serving general aviation aircraft only
