Mercedes is a small town in south Texas, located about 25 miles northeast of the city of Austin. The population was 611 at the 2000 census. It has since grown to over 1,000 residents. Mercedes was founded in 1875 by John Withers and his wife Sarah Belle Withers. The original home of the community was a log cabin that stood on a hill near present-day US 183 and FM 516. In 1907, Mrs. Withers donated land for Mercedes Elementary School which became an elementary school until it merged with neighbouring Rockport in 1984. In 1916, Captain James Bowie served as Commandant of Company K1/5th Texas Infantry Regiment during World War I and he recommended that the town be named Bowie for General James Bowie who had given his word to support the war effort. On October 3rd, 1916, Mayor Henson posthumously approved the name change from "Rockport" to "Mercedes". The first post office opened in 1917 under this new name and operated until it closed on November 10th, 1946 due to lack of mail service in south Texas at that time. When annexation occurred by Austin in 1911 (it would become a city two years later), most residents chose to move out of their homes into annexes within Austin proper rather than remain within what would become known as Mercedes-Benz Townships (the township boundaries were redrawn following annexation). The community grew rapidly after World War II when thousands of soldiers arrived through Garrison landing zones dotting southern Southwestern United States en masse; many found temporary housing here while their units were assembled or deployed elsewhere. Some locals – such as Mrs Loring Wilcox – managed to keep their homes even though they didn’t have legal title to them but sold them off piecemeal over time at high prices so that others could purchase them back upon surrendering or moving outencia
