Killeen, Texas is a small city in the U.S. state of Texas and the seat of Austin County. The population was 8,845 at the 2010 census, making it the third-smallest city in Texas after Austin and Fort Worth. Killeen is located on Williamson Road near I-35W exit 287, about 20 miles northeast of Dallas and 30 miles southwest of Houston. The town was founded by John Hancey in 1881 as an agricultural settlement known as Knoxville Junction. It grew rapidly due to its location on a major east-west railroad route and its connection to nearby Abilene. In 1907, Killeen became an incorporated municipality under the name of "Killeen", after combining land from three separate townships that had been organized around Knoxville Junction: Bremner Township (northwest of Killeen), Chapman Township (southwest of Killeen), and Willacy Township (southwest of Abilene). In 1931, Imperial County acquired all but 2 square miles (3 km²) of the City Limits including much of what now makes up Killeen's downtown area. In 1937, portions were annexed by Dripping Springs; however, annexation passed into law only when Dripping Springs withdrew its opposition to incorporation because it saw no practical way to prevent development within its boundaries without undergoing a full municipal merger with neighboring Dripping Springs which also objected to any form annexation attempt).
