Kilgore, Texas is a small town in Ellis County, Texas, located on the banks of the Trinity River. The population was 5,569 at the 2010 census. It lies about halfway between Austin and Dallas. The town was named for Captain James Kilgore who fought in the Mexican-American War and in 1848 as a member of Company K (2nd Battalion) Ninth Cavalry Regiment under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. The name "Kilgore" comes from Spanish meaning "a post". At one time there were two businesses in Kilgore - an oil refinery and a sawmill - but they closed down around 1930. Today, only one business remains - Kilgore Elementary School which has been open since 1923. Kilgore is home to four churches: First Baptist Church (founded 1886), Methodist Episcopal Church (1898), Presbyterian Church (1893), and Iglesia de Dios Apostólico Mexicano (1904). There are also several small shops and restaurants within the town limits. The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and mild to cool winters; however, due to its close proximity to Austin it experiences quite a bit of humidity all year round. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Kilgore has a humid subtropical climate morphology. However, during summer months much more vaporized water accumulates than does liquid water giving off an unpleasant odor because of carbo-hydroxy acid dehydrogenase activity; this can cause sweating so often during hotter days that people actually start turning orange! Kilgore is a town in Archer County, Texas, United States. The population was 941 at the 2010 census. Kilgore is the county seat of Archer County. It was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1857 and named for John A. Kilgore, a landowner in nearby McLennan County. The first post office in Kilgore opened on December 2, 1857, under the name of Thomson Station. The name change to Archer Springs on February 15, 1861, due to objections from surrounding communities that were renamed after other counties or people. The original post office building still stands today and is used as a community center for Archer County residents and tourists alike. During World War II, Kilgore served as an airfield for the U.SAAF during the buildup to Operation OVERLORD which led to Japan's surrender1945. After the war ended, Kilgore continued serving as an important militarybase until its closure in 1971 when it was replaced by Fort Worth Municipal Airport south of town
The town of Kilgore, Texas was founded by James F. Kilgore in 1871. The town was named for his father, Kilgore County Judge John H. Kilgore. The first post office in the town was established in 1872 and the first store was built in 1875. The first school opened in 1880 and the first church was built in 1885. In 1886, the railroad came to Kilgore and it became a small stop on the line. In 1915, the town had a population of 509 people and it grew to 719 people by 1920. From 1925 until 1951, there were no elections to the local government because there were only five residents living in Kilgore at that time. In 1951, there were elections and four residents lived in the town with a total population of 1,859 people.
