However, this decision later changed when Army Brigadier General John Waddell became Director of Plans at Headquarters USArmy West Point and recommended that all infantry divisions be reorganized into three brigades instead of one brigade per divisional command structure; consequently, the First Infantry Division was reactivated on October 1st 1951 as part of III Corps under Lieutenant General Raymond Doolittle’s newly created Third Army (later renamed I Corps). Since then, Huntsville has seen many active duty military installations come and go: Third Army's Mather Air Force Base closed in 1973; Fourth Brigade Combat Team's Fort Polk Site Closed in 1984; Fifth Brigade Combat Team's Ft Carson Site Closed in 1992; Sixth Brigade Combat Team's Goodfellow AFB Site Closed in 2001; Seventh Brigade Combat Team's Alamo City Site Closed on September 11th 2009; Eighth Brigade Combat Team's Eldorado Hills AB closed effective December 15th 2014. Additionally throughout II Corps' tenure there have been several unit deployments including: Company A - deployed to Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm on January 17th 1990 In recent years there have also been multiple deployments for various state militias not affiliated with the military: Armor Regiment 23 deploying to Middle Tennessee during Hurricane Floyd on August 16th 2017 On April 12th 2018 it was announced that IV Corps will take over responsibility for III Corps from Lieutenant General Raymond Doolittle which ends Cherokee County Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s reign as Commander-in-Chief of Law Enforcement for Maricopa County

Houston then displaced Huntsville as Travis County's largest city due to its rapid growth during that era; however, Houston will always rank second behind Huntsville in terms of population size based on2010 Census estimates
