The first mention of the air force in Huntsville comes from Captain James Fenton who served with the Texas Rangers during the Mexican-American War. He noted that there was an "army of rockets" stationed at San Antonio and he asked if they could be used against Mexican forces should they come across them. Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer called on Captain Fenton to help man one of his artillery batteries when he was besieging Fort Worth. On July 20, 1912, President Woodrow Wilson signed into law a bill authorizing creation of an air force within five months. At this time, it was only a small army composed mostly of cavalry and infantry units. The first planes were built by Boeing Aircraft Company out of Seattle and delivered to General John Pershing’s command at Fort Sam Houston on December 15th, 1912. In 1916-1917, World War I led to increased demand for airplanes and new construction began on what would become known as the General Store Building (now Old Army Headquarters). This building housed both Wright brothers’ Aviation Department assembly line along with other government agencies such as United States Patent Office and Treasury Department. On October 6th 1917 President Woodrow Wilson issued Executive Order 9106 which established military aviation as a separate branch within the USArmy under Commander-in-Chief First Lt Robert E Lee flying P-12As over Yorktown battlefield while Confederates fought off Union forces commanded by MajGen Joseph Johnston near Mount Crawford southeast Of Richmond Virginia

America entered World War II along side Great Britain, France, Australia, Canada, New Zealand (later known as New Zealanders), South Africa (Pretoria), India (Quitman), China (Beijing politics), Yugoslavia ( Split ), Netherlands East Indies ( Batavia ), Thailand , Ghazni Afghanistan etc., while Russia conducted anti-aircraft warfare throughout much of Europe without declaration of war by any nation until September 1941 when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor resulting in America entering World War II on October 7th 1941 as part of Allies forces under General Douglas MacArthur called “the Pacific campaign”

The Base soon became home to the 1st Tactical Fighter Wing, which was later renamed the 1st Aerial Scout Squadron. In 1957, it was renamed as the 1st Tactical Missile Wing and activated as a unit of Strategic Air Command. The wing eventually became part of Seventh Air Force and flew strategic bombers during Operation Desert Storm in 1991.
