The Hereford Coast Guard has been providing service to the community since 1915. The Coast Guard was originally established to provide law and order on the Texas coast. In 1950, the Coast Guard began providing assistance to local fire departments in response to coastal fires. In 1984, the Coast Guard began providing search and rescue services in response to coastal emergencies. Today, the Coast Guard is responsible for protecting Texans from inland threats as well as acting as a deterrent against human smuggling and piracy. Hereford is located on the right bank of the Brazos River and within easy driving distance of Amarillo and Midland. The first settlers in what is now Hereford were Methodist missionaries who arrived in 1876. The town was named for heretical Protestant cleric John Fenton Hereford (1797-1860). Hereford is a small town in Cooke County, Texas, United States. It was founded in 1881 by the merger of two smaller towns, Hereford and Kerrville. The population was 1,968 at the 2010 census. The original town site was on the banks of the Colorado River. In 1881, Hereford's first post office was established near what is now Chisago Park. The name "Hereford" originated from Hereford Creek which meandered through the town site. A school and a store were built in 1883; but it wasn't until 1886 that an academy was opened in Hereford to educate children of farmers and other early settlers. In 1889, surveyors estimated that there were 10 people living in Hereford proper and another 100 scattered throughout adjacent rural areas surrounding it; however, only 3-4 residents actually lived in the present day town limits when they were platted as part of Addison Township (now Cooke County). By 1901, there were over 100 residents residing within its current boundaries - more than any other community within Cooke County at that time! Today’s population is almost completely constituted by descendants of those original pioneers who arrived during or after Cooke County’s earliest days as a county seat. During World War II here employment opportunities grew rapidly due to production at nearby Refinery #2 on Pecos River just upstream from here (the largest refinery west of Wichita Falls). This refinery produced gasoline and kerosene for military use; this also helped to spur economic development around here during wartime years! Postwar growth continued with many new businesses being born including several hospitals/medical centers (including one now known as Baylor University Hospital), several supermarkets/convenience stores, retail parks and numerous civic buildings such as libraries/parks etc.; all helping contribute to today’s vibrant downtown core!
