The United States Air Force has a long and proud history in Hereford, Texas. The A-10 Warthog is the service’s primary aircraft and it is one of the most popular planes in the USAF. The A-10 was designed as a ground attack aircraft and its design made it very versatile. It can be used for bombing raids, airlift operations, or even surface actions. The plane is also extremely reliable and easy to maintain. The first Warthogs were purchased by the USAF in 1985. They were initially operated by the 5th Tactical Fighter Wing at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas. In 1993, they were moved to Beechcraft F-16A Fighting Falcons at Moody AFB in Dahlonega, Georgia before being reassigned to th Air National Guard unit here in 2002. In 2006, the USAF transferred ownership of these planes back to Hereford County Commissioners from Beechcraft Corporation who had operated them since 1995 when they were leased from McConnell AFB (later Wright-Patterson AFB). This event marked an important milestone for Hereford County as these airplanes have been our mainstay for many years now!

Hereford is a small town in the TX Panhandle, located about 30 miles east of Austin. The population was 914 at the 2000 census, but has grown to 1,827 since then. Hereford is one of the oldest continuously inhabited towns in Texas and was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1836. It became an independent city in 1907 and a state capital in 1935. The downtown area is home to several stores and restaurants, as well as a library and art museum.
In 1861, Confederate General James Longstreet moved his headquarters from Huntsville to Hereford after achieving military success against Union forces near San Jacinto River. The town was briefly renamed Richmond on November 16th before reverted back to Hereford that same day following complaints from surrounding areas over the name change. In 1865, herefords first school opened up with 28 students taught by Mrs. Witherspoon. A second school followed in 1868 with 60 students taught by Rev. Hutton & Mrs. Laughlin; however due to financial problems the school closed within two years.
The town’s first grocery store opened up in 1881 with six employees selling groceries direct to residents through their homes Theatre owners Drury & Beecham bought out Mr. Hutton’s share of the business for $3,000 . By 1915 there were over 100 businesses operating at Hereford including banks (Jarrett Trust Company, First National Bank), hotels (The Dallas Hotel), restaurant (The Gilded Cage), doctor’s office (Drury Maternity Hospital), post office (First Texas Post Office) and more! Church History: Reverend John Hutton served as pastor from 1868 until his death in 1901 while Reverend Harry Laughlin took over from him from 1902 until his death four years later also serving two terms consecutively[# imagesize: 400px] [/sup>. Reverend John Hutton is buried at Oakwood Cemetery alongside many others who made up early Protestant denominations including Methodists Episcopalians Baptists Presbyterians Congregationalist Lutherans United Brethren Nazarene Zion Methodist Episcopalians.
