As a result of this capture, Greenville became part of Cuba for three years until it was liberated by American forces on May 15th, 1902. The first white people to live permanently in what is now Greenville were surveyors who arrived in 1828 with Surveyor George Brazelton’s brigade under Colonel James Wilkinson. For many years after their arrival there were only Indian traders living hereabouts because no permanent residents had been appointed by the land grantees to manage and protect these lands which had been granted to them without any consideration for future generations. An act passed by the State Legislature on February 12th, 1857 designated Cherokee County as an armory precinct east of Nacogdoches at a point where Clear Fork River flows into it from the Gulf coast; thence through Cherokee County (westward) to its mouth within said county line; thence along said river’s course (to its source) generally southwesterly; thence generally northeastward to its mouth within said county line; thence via Clear Fork River westward into Cherokee County where they landed near Nacogdoches on September 6th following year . . . This area would eventually become known as “Greeneville” although most locals still refer to themselves simply as Texans or Americans since no law binding them thereto ever took effect until 1881 when Congress amended Article III Section 2 of the Texas Constitution which states: “No Texan shall be compelled or suffer himself organized or enrolled among any other people within our state save such Indians as are saved expressly provided for herein” After being evacuated from Fort Worth during Hurricane Ike on August 29th 2008 many citizens decided to move back into their homes that they had built over 40 years ago when they thought things could finally calm down again Official website: www
