The Freeport Army Garrison was established in 1892 as the first military post in what is now Freeport, Texas. The garrison was a log-and-timber structure located on the east side of town, about one mile south of what is now the downtown area. The fort served as an artillery and cavalry post during World War I and II. In 1957, the Freeport Army Garrison was closed and its assets were sold to the Defense Department for use as a military training center. Today, portions of the fort are still used for military purposes.
