The Navy has a long and proud history in Ennis, Texas. The town was founded by settlers in 1881 and became a military base during World War II. Today, the Navy maintains a presence in Ennis through its Military Sealift Command – which provides storage, transport, and infrastructure for military supplies and equipment. The first navy ship to enter service in Ennis was the USS Constellation on July 1st, 1861. The ship was built at the same facilities as the USS Constitution which helped create American naval supremacy during the Civil War. The USS Constellation served until 1865 when it was decommissioned and sold for scrap. In 1881, John A. Waddell donated land to the city of Ennis for use as a naval station. At that time, only two boats had been bought by the navy: one from Marble Falls (Tex.) businessman Augustus Hennepin and another from San Antonio (Texas). On December 7th of that year, Commodore James Ewing put his commission into effect authorizing construction of four steamboats: HMCS Athabasca (1882), HMCS Prince Rupert (1883), HMS Resolute (1885) and HMS Vulcan ( 1886). In 1892-93, Rear Admiral George Fenton took command of Naval Station Ennis after Commodore James Ewing’s death. Admiral Fenton spearheaded development of new ships such as HMCS Franklin D Roosevelt which entered service in 1912 along with other new vessels such as HMS Dunlop’s sloop Andromache(1910). During WWII Rear Admiral Harry S Truman ordered construction of fifteen destroyers including three submarines – all at Naval Station Ennis under Commander Chester Nimitz who would later head up US Pacific Command during WWII . In 1951-1952 Captain J C Stroud took command of Naval Station Ennis after Captain Harry S Truman’s retirement; he would lead it until 1966 when it closed due to budget cuts. However rehabilitation efforts were finally successful enough for it to reopen on August 1st 1967 under Commander R P Sprague with an expanded staff including weather observers, sonar technicians etc.; this led to its present day role as Naval Fleet Support Center - also known locally as NRSC or North River Squadron Headquarters - responsible for providing support both afloat and ashore to 13 multinational fleets operating out of Corpus Christi Bay . To date there have been over 350 commissioned officers commanding NRSC - making it one of Canada's most prestigious services!NRSC is home to numerous navies worldwide including United States Seventh Fleet's aircraft carrier strike group "Osprey" embarked Marine Air Wing 11and Helicopter Squadron 159d Carrier Strike Group "Hercules". James Hennigan had come from Ireland and married Jane Kerr (née Anderson) while she was living with her parents near Fort Worth, Texas He purchased land east of downtown Ennis on which he erected a ranch that continues to this day to be one of the most successful ranches in Texas It is believed that James Hennigan may have been instrumental in helping lead Dallas into prominence as an American city
