From 1901 until 1924 Ennis was served by an ad hoc committee composed largely of citizens from neighboring towns which reported to thePRESIDING OFFICER OF THE DISTRICT OF HENRY COUNTY--the landowner then being responsible for all public purposes in that locality/division/comity etc.; but on May 21st, 1924 (*3 weeks after*) county commissioners were appointed to take over this function*. In 1928 Ennis voters approved annexation into Henry County following a referendum brought about by county officials alleging “the refusal or inability” of local officials to provide sewerage facilities* [* * *. *]. On January 17th, 1931(*2 years ago*) following annexation proceedings having been completed and notice having been given both to landowners within ennis limits [*] [* * *. *], incorporation took effect under state law as provided by sections 706(a) & 707(b) thereof††† [**. *. *.]. There are currently 1,595 residents living in Ennis proper according to the 2010 census; but annexed areas including Templeport (to the east), Greenacres (to the west), Willow Park (southwest), Cross Plains (northwest) & Falcon Heights (northeast) have yet to be fully populated so their populations will not reach 1k until 2019 or 2020 at earliest! Despite this large population growth rate howeverEnnis still remains rural with most residents remaining engaged with their families or farm activities alone* [* *. ]. One interesting fact about Ennis’s history – relevant both today and back when it first formed part of Hudspeth County – is that while most businesses closed down during Prohibition*, many did so because they could no longer compete against bootleggers operating out of other larger cites such as Dallas or Houston* [**. ]. These days however*, even though alcohol sales continue to be illegal*, most businesses maintain some degree of trade despite difficult competition* [* *. ]. Ennis, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas. The population was 1,996 at the 2000 census. The name of the town is derived from English settlers who built a post office there in 1881. The community was founded by Ennis and other local residents on an old farmstead known as "The Fence" in 1881. In 1902, the town became part of Hudspeth County when it was created from parts of Wetumpka and Palestine counties. In 1909, the county seat changed to Ennis after the agency that administered Hudspeth County moved from Wetumpka to Ennis. By 1920, however, Ennis had lost its status as county seat due to population growth in neighboring Palestine County and its replacement by Springtown. In 1930, Hudspeth County merged with Barker County to form new Barker-HudspethCounty. At the time of its merger, Barker-HudspethCounty had a population of 362 people and Ennis had a population of 78 people. After World War II ended in 1945, enrollment atEnnis High School declined because many young men served in WWII or left for good before their high school diplomas were earned; however renewed interest led to increased enrollments beginning in 1949 and continuing through the 1960s when enrollment peaked at 1,089 students in 1970-71 but then continued declining until 1980 when it reached 961 students (the current enrollment is 893). As per 2010 US Census estimates[1], Ennis' median household income is $72,818 (the statewide median household income is $63,482). Hispanic or Latino Americans make up 17% (or about 11% of total) of total households,[2] while African Americans make up just 2%. In addition to its agricultural history dating back over 100 years,[3][4][5] Ennis also has significant memories from World War II which helped shape local identities including service members stationed there during that conflict[6][7]. On September 10th 1944,[8] Japanese forces bombed Pearl Harbor resulting in more than 60% loss of life among both civilians and military personnel within Hawaii[9]. Many Japanese citizens living on Oahu were interned at various camps throughout the islands including one located near present dayEnnis called Hickman Post Office Park[10]. Of particular note are three Japanese American prisoners-of-war who remain unaccounted for following their capture by U.S Forces on Christmas Day 1941: Captain Kenichi Matsubara (a cavalry officer), Lieutenant Noboru Shimamura (an artillery officer) and Corporal Yoshimi Abe (an airman).[11] Three weeks later Japan signed an agreement ending hostilities with United States which set free all captives except for two: Captains Matsubara and Shimamura were released on October 15th.[12][13] Since these events occurred mere months after America entered World War II,[14] some historians have argued that they may have been working together as part of Japan's wartime espionage efforts against America.[15][16] However more recent research has shown this theory does not holdup under scrutiny since no incriminating evidence exists linking either man directly to espionage activities during wartime – instead they may simply have been released accidentally without any further information being provided regarding their whereabouts or activities.[17][18] Today's economy depends largely upon agriculture although metalworking continues to be a major employer as well;[19][20][21](See Figure 1.)A number of businesses have been established around highway 22 such as Home Depot,[22](See Figure 2,) Kroger store[](See Figure 3,) ExxonMobil gas station[](SeeFigure 4,) ABC store[](SeeFigure 5,) Pizza Hut restaurant[](SeeFigure 6,) etc.; most notably Hooters restaurant []owned by Eddie Bauer opened along Highway 22 shortly after 1990 which made it one of first fast food restaurants open inside Interstate 35W between Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport exits 7 & 8.( See Figure 7 .) The surrounding area has seen rapid development over the past few decades with several shopping centers opening upincluding Richland Mall (), Ann Taylor (), Hanes ()(), Sears ()()and JCPenney (). A variety new bars and restaurants have also opened up such as ABC steak house [](), Longhorn Steak House (), Mohawk Tavern ()()and Rock Bottom Brewery (). Additionally several professional sports teams play their games near or across the street fromEnnsIHS football stadium (); basketball team (); soccer team (); baseball team (); golf team (); tennis team ; active water park [](); horse stable ]; etc.: most notably nearby Crossroads Mall []; Cadillacs ]; Fifth Third Bank [23]; Walmart [](); IMAX movie theater []; AMC theaters []; etc.).
