Donna, Texas is home to one of the largest and most diverse armies in the United States. The Donna Army National Guard has a rich history dating back to World War II. The unit was originally called the 1st Infantry Division and later renamed the 3rd Infantry Division in 1963. In 1990, the division was merged with the 2nd Infantry Division to create the current 5th Infantry Division.
The 5th Ia Divisions motto is "Erected for Democracy" and its colors are blue and gold. It traces its roots back to World War I when it was first organized as an infantry brigade under command of Major General John J. Pershing Jr. on October 10, 1917 at Camp Logan near Wichita Falls, Texas. The brigade served in Europe throughout World War I before being sent home in 1919. It was reactivated again in 1942 as part of Continental Command under command of General George C Marshall and served throughout both world wars until 1945 when it was disbanded due to budget cuts by President Franklin D Roosevelt.
In 1959, the division reopened at Fort Bliss Army base in San Antonio after being stationed there since 1940 as part of United States Forces Far East (USFOR-E). After serving as a garrison unit there for several years, it returned permanently to Fort Bliss in 1962 when USFOR-E became United States Army Forces Korea (USAFK). Initially known as First Cavalry Brigade (1 CA), it concurrently upgraded from cavalry battalion/regiment/divisional headquarters companies into brigades/army divisions on December 15, 1966 with Headquarters Company becoming 1st Battalion/35th Regiment activated at Ft Sam Houston AFB TX on January 16, 1967; concurrently redesignated 3d Brigade Combat Team (BCT) on July 9 th , 1969; concurrently redesignated 5th Brigade Combat Team effective November 15 th . While stationed at AFK during Vietnam era some elements were re-designated: 8th Brigade Combat Team from May 1968 until early 1971 while located at Da Nang AB concurrent with 1st Corps HQ; 11th Brigade Aide Control Group from early 1971 until 1973 while located at Perrin AFB concurrent with 4th Corps HQ; finally 13 rd Brigade Support Group activated February 24 th , 1975 which relieved 3d BCT effective April 12 th . 14 th -present day active duty components are brigades/army divisions currently designated:
