Corsicana, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The estimated population was 9,355 at the 2010 census. Corsicana is the county seat of Hudspeth County and home to the Hudspeth Museum. The community began as a frontier settlement in 1836 and was founded on a rancho called Rancho de las Brisas by Spanish-born rancher Manuel Gonzales and his family. Corsicana became an important stop on the Santa Fe Trail before it was supplanted by Austin as the capital of Texas in 1857. The Gambrel House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. After Mexican independence from Spain in 1821 and until 1848, presidencies of Hudspeth County were held by members of several Mexican families: Alvarado, Amador, Arizmendi, Carrillo y Ulloa. In 1848, Mexico ceded all but southeastern Texas to United States control under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo; consequently, only Hudspeth County remained with Mexican rule. After American victory over Mexico at San Jacinto in1862 - which ended slavery in Mexico - most Mexicans left for exile or internal exile within their own countries or groups throughout what are now New Mexico and Arizona; however some elements of Mexican aristocracy continued to live among Anglo Americans through adoption or marriage into US families (e.g., Francisco Javier García Villa). In 1865 photographer George Worth photographs scenes around ranchos such as Rancho de las Brisas before its destruction by fire; this led to increased interest in ranch life and photography among Anglo Americans living adjacent to Presidio Missions west of Austin during Reconstruction from 1865-1870s due to increasing social tensions caused by new waves of immigrants following Reconstruction efforts that were implemented by president Abraham Lincoln based upon his belief that America's destiny lay within its racial purity (i.e., white people could Become Great again). As early as 1870s residents had begun referring to Corsicana as "the little city" because it had become one of numerous towns/villages sprouting up throughout Starr County after annexation by Dallas during local government consolidation movement nicknamed "The Division". By 1880 Census there were 3 posts office here & over 20 businesses including 1 grocery store (& 2 saloons), 2 barbershops (& 1 dry goods store), bank & school system." By 1890 there were 6 post office branches & 100 businesses with Corsicanans majority being farmers who raised livestock (mainly cows)& processed produce for markets east & west of town."
Corsicana was founded in 1795 by Manuel Corsico and Spanish soldiers. The city became a seat of government for the Tejas County seat in 1834. In 1860, it was the site of the Texas Revolution. After the war, Corsicana developed as a commercial center with its own schools and newspapers. It served as the capital of Texas from 1861 to 1865 and again from 1867 to 1870. In 1907, Corsicana hosted the international Cotton Exposition, which contributed significantly to its growth as a tourist destination.
