In 1837, Commodore James Watts founded Fort Worth Naval Asylum in Conroe to provide services for sailors and marines who had been shipwrecked or lost at sea. The hospital became one of the largest naval installations in the United States and its structure still stands today. In 1916, Conroe was renamed Fort Worth Naval Shipyard after Rear Admiral John Fenton Hull, Commandant of the Marine Corps during World War I. The shipyard produced many warships that were used during World Wars II and Korean War. After the war, the navy decommissioned most of its warships but kept some ships in storage until they were sold off in the 1970s and 1980s. Today, you can visit Fort Worth Naval Shipyard to see some of these old vessels up close. Today, parts of Fort Worth Naval Shipyard are used by several different organizations such as NASA’s Johnson Space Center and Dell Inc.'s TXPC plant which produces computer monitors and other electronic products for American consumers. In 1849 it became the county seat of Conroe County. On November 1, 1861, the first election for members of the Texas House of Representatives were held in Conroe and Houston; all six candidates who ran were nominated by party bosses and won without any opposition. The town's population rapidly increased as planters brought their slaves to work on their plantations. By 1865, Conroe had a population of over 100,000 people.
