The Coast Guard in Brownsville, Texas has been providing a safe and secure environment for the citizens of the community since 1903. Brownsville is a city in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 31,526 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. Brownsville was founded on November 12, 1836 by John Brown and his men as the town of New Orleans de la Salle. The name "Brownsville" originated with General George Stephenson's use of it to designate a point on the San Antonio River near present-day Houston that he thought might be reached by wagonloads of Texans after their retreat from Mexico City in 1835. This point had been tried unsuccessfully by pioneer James Fenton in 1822 and again in 1827. In 1830 prospectors discovered oil shale near what is now Brownsville and sold recovery rights to Henry Mina & Co., led by James Bowie, for $5,000 payable over a period of ten years. The first permanent settler arrived in what is now Brownsville about December 1, 1836 when four men from Illinois under contract with Captain David Dixon explored a location along Buffalo Bayou called Rice Creek which they named Prairie du Chien (the same name applied to several other points within this vicinity). A post office was established at Prairie du Chien on January 10, 1840, but no mail ever arrived there because transportation then consisted only of pack horses and wagons drawn by oxen or mules across buffalo grass plains divided equally between Mexican and Anglo settlers. On July 20, 1840 Samuel French opened an hotel at what is now First Baptist Church downtown; it served as headquarters for various Rangers sent against Sam Houston during the Texas Revolution until disbanded on October 3 that year after capitulation of Houston's forces three days earlier at Montero Ranch east of Westphalia (now Dallas). In November 1840 John Wetherbee moved his family to Brownsville from Karnack Township northwest of Austin beforeTexan independence Articles were ratified there on December 15 following Battle Of Palo Alto where Texan forces drove Mexican soldiers out from Poston Creek Bridge northward into today's Humble County northeast of today's Corpus Christi. As early as February 1718 Pecos Parish constable James Robertson documented Indian attacks upon white settlers east side Brazoria River valley including destruction or removalof fences around Spanish Presidio Mission settlements near modern day Springdale TX although nothing similar occurred west side Rio Grande Valley nor any presidio settlements located within present day Brownsburg TX however some evidence suggests squatters/invaders routinely attacked mission stations outside original ranch boundaries prior to Mexican annexation

The growth of Brownsville has been both positive and negative: while it has increased its population significantly, however, its infrastructure has not kept up; accordingly, many homes have been dilapidated and are now used as dumps or warehouses. Despite this problem, however, Brownsburg remains one of the most vibrant communities in Texas today.
