Big Spring, Texas is a small town in the county of Cooke in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 5,924 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area and is included in the Austin-Round Rock Urban area. According to the 2000 census, Big Spring had a population of 4,851 people and 3,689 households. The population has grown since then to 7,711 residents as of 2016 according to their website. The townsite that now makes up Big Spring was first settled by Scots Presbyterians in 1836 following a land grant from President James K. Polk. The community prospered due to its location on San Marcos River and its access to irrigation water supplies from nearby Canyon Lake. In 1872, Big Spring became an independent municipality when it combined with two other settlements - Palestine (now Palestine Springs) and Clear Creek - forming what would become known as "The Third Town". During World War II, Big Spring served as a military airfield for the United States Air Force Ninth Air Force which flew Lockheed P-38 Lightning aircraft over assigned targets in central Texas during December 1941 – May 1942 under Operation Varsity

Big Spring, Texas is located in the Lone Star State, approximately 120 miles northeast of Dallas and 50 miles southwest of Houston. The town was founded by a group of Texans who decided to establish a new trading post on the Gulf of Mexico after discovering oil fields in that area. In 1836, Big Spring became the capital of the Mexican Republic and was one of several towns in that territory which were destroyed by American forces during the Mexican-American War. Big Spring resumed its role as an important center within Mexican America following their victory over U.S. forces at Pecos Bridge in 1848. A year later, Big Spring was annexed into Texan soil and has remained an important local community ever since. The history of Big Spring began with some very early settlers who set up camp near what is now downtown on January 6, 1836. These men were led by Captain John Neely Bryan and his brother-in-lawCaptain James Fenton Wilkinson Jr.. The two captains had come across land which they believed would be ideal for settlement because it lay at the mouth of a small stream called Brazos River. After surveying their land, they decided to build homes and establish a trading post near what is now known as First Street and Center Avenue. One day before their arrival, Indian traders living nearby attacked them, resulting in the death of many people including Bryan and Wilkinson Sr.. The survivors built their first cabin on what is now Wells Street just south of Center Avenue. From here they traded goods with Indians from all around East Texas until British traders arrived in 1839 to take over that trade sector from the Mexicans. In 1840, General Sam Houston landed at Corpus Christi Bayou with his army to attack Mexico City under cover of darkness while supplies were being unloaded ashore from warships anchored offshore! His goal was to seize control of Mexico’s oil resources so that he could build an empire based upon this wealth! However, when he reached Mexico City he found that Spanish soldiers controlled most aspects thereof! Houston therefore decided instead to march inland towards Texan territory where he expected resistance (he had no idea that Mexican President Antonio López de Santa Anna would quickly recognize his claims). On November 29th 1840 while marching through San Augustine County (now part Of Harris County), Houston discovered oil wells west of present day Huntsville! This discovery thrust Big Spring onto national stage as it became one of the leading contenders for control over this key resource! Not long afterHouston made these crucial discoveries, business boomed thanks to increased demand for oil products throughout America!! Texans soon started arriving at Big Spring not only seeking work but also investing money into various business ventures such as lumbering, mining etc… By 1850 there were 10 businesses operating outofBigSpringandthispopulationswas estimatedtobetwentyfiftyone hundredpeople!!!!!! By 1860 about one thousand people lived inBigSpringandthetownwasalreadyonthebrinkofdecline due totransportation difficulties causedbythehighcostsofmovingoilands coalaroundthesouthwesternUS!!! Howeverrestorationprogramsbeginningin1972havemademaintainedbigspringaspresidentialcommunitywithabrandnewdistrictname: BB&T Field District!!!
