The first Europeans to visit this area were French explorers in 1692 and 1693, who named it "Ile aux Cochons" (Island of the Cows). A post office was established at Millington in 1827, and remained in operation until 1901. Millington began to rise rapidly during the early years of the 20th century as a result of its strategic location on Canisteo Creek between two major mountain ranges - the Appalachian Mountains to the north and east and Knoxville to the south - giving it easy access to both local resources and trade with surrounding counties. The town's growth continued unabated into today's day as more people relocated here for both economic opportunities and natural wonders such as hunting and fishing potential within minutes' distance of each other. In 1913, when Hardin County became one of twenty-four judicial districts created by Act No. 107 of 1912, Millington became its district seat; however, due to rapid population growth within that jurisdiction over time, Millington again reverted back to its original name – Hardin County – upon establishment of new judicial districts in 1922. Millington is a city in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 25,481 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Knoxville–Davidson metropolitan area. It was named for John Milligan who settled in the area in 1827. The first mill there was built by Alexander Cockerill and operated until 1840. A new mill, also called Cockerill's Mill, was built on the current site of Millington in 1853 by James Witherspoon and became one of the largest flour mills ever built in Tennessee. In 1865, Jeptha Barnes started a bakery which became world-renowned and soon produced loaves weighing up to 2 pounds (0.9 kg). In 1898, Harry Hargrave opened a barbershop/beauty parlor adjacent to his store that became one of Knoxville's most popular tourist destinations. By 1910 there were over 100 businesses operating in Millington with a population size of nearly 60 percent of its pre-World War II peak. In 1945 Millington began serving as capital for Williamson County after it was selected as the county seat following an agreement between then-County Executive George Thomas and then-Governor David Dudley Vance. The city reached its present population size within five years after being founded and quickly grew into one of central Knoxville's fastest growing areas during the postwar period; at its peak it had more than 100 residents employed in industry or services such as health care and education. With steady growth came increased social services needed to support large numbers of residents - including several public schools - but also led to concerns about potential resident congestion and parking issues which have still been problems today even as circulation has surged over 1 million passengers per year through downtown Millington alone since 2000 .
