The Navy has a rich history in Yankton, South Dakota. The first Naval Base was established in the town in 1881. The Navy played an important role inYPancho County during World War II and the Korean War. In 1951, the Yankton Naval Air Station became a naval air station and was used for training pilots and fighter aircraft. The Naval Base closed down in 1972 but remained an important part of the community until its closure. Today, there are only a few artifacts from this time left in Yankton.

This operation was designed to unify the country by providing arms and ammunition to Democratic South Korea while also supporting North Korean forces fighting for freedom against Japanese occupiers.]] Pueblo made her maiden voyage on September 6th of that year and arrived at Ocumulon Key on October 1st.]] On October 15th., she departed from Key with three other warships: USS Enterprise (CVN 64), USS Guam (PHI 33), USS Lexington CVN 42) for Ulchi Freedom Guardian exercises off North Korea.]] On November 10th., Enterprise reached Sasebo Harbor after departing from Wonsan harbor two days earlier.}] During this time, she collided with USS John Skelley (DD-812)]]]>On December 2nd., Enterprise arrived at Sasebo Harbor after departing from Wonsan harbor two days earlier.]]On December 9th., while escorting Task Unit 53 curriculum unit 21 ships forward unit 706 accompanyingprovisionshipsinOperationCrossroads],Enterprise collided withUSSJohnSkelley (DD-812). There were no injuries reported however Enterprise had severe damage requiring repairs that took four months before she could be returned into service again.]]]>On January 3rd., 1957 Commodore Ralph Ewing relieved Admiral James Schlesinger as Commandant of USNS Farragut () after Vice Admiral Jesse Turner took command following Rear Admiral Cecil Wright’s death.]]]>From February 8 – March 8th Commander Rufus Haines commanded Destroyer Squadron Nine consisting of destroyer escort destroyers HMS Colville(DE 281) and HMS Daring(DE 282)). After completing liberty cruise southward along Mexico coast Haines sailed back northbound on March 11th en route back to Charleston NC where he relieved Commodore Rufus Haines as Commander Destroyer Squadron Nine on April 5th.}]]>From May 25 through June 1st Commodore David Ladd commanded Destroyer Squadron Five consisting ofdestroyer escort destroyers HMCS Saint John(DV 209), HMCS Athabasca(DV 210), HMCS Windsor Beach(DV 211)),andHMS Cumberland(HFBS 104))duringOperationFreedomoftheSouthSea]. Yankton is a town in Cass County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 2,085 at the 2010 census. Yankton is the seat of Cass County government. The name comes from "Yankee" and "kanton". The first people to live in what is now Yankton were the Sioux. They were forced out of their land by white settlers in 1868. In 1881, the Sioux ceded part of their land to the United States for military purposes as Fort Yates Indian Reservation. The reservation was sold to the town in 1907. In 1912, Wm Henson built a sawmill on the Missouri River near what is now downtown Yankton. The mill closed in 1959 but left its mark on Yankton with its wide variety of products including lumber, hardware, and door parts. It also provided jobs for many local residents until it closed down permanently in 1984 due to resource depletion and competition from other mills in nearby Rapid City. The post office opened at Yankton on July 10, 1889, under the name Pelly Creek Station (later renamed after Captain John Pelly). It was renamed Yankton on October 16th of that year when postmaster Wm Henson received a letter from Simeon Aiken asking him to take over running the station because his father had passed away two months earlier. It changed hands three times before it merged with neighboring Post Office #2 on May 1st of 1907 which became known as Kossuthville Post Office #1 due to Drury's store being located one mile east of Kossuthville at that time After this merger most mail was delivered by wagon or stagecoach between Kossuthville and Rapid City until diesel locomotives replaced horses as postal service provider effective August 1st 1947 .
