The Yankton National Guard was organized on November 3, 1885. The organization was originally called the "Yankton Volunteer Infantry." The first unit to be activated were two companies of men from the community of Yankton. On December 1, 1885, the Yankton Volunteers were redesignated as the "National Guards". On May 25, 1889, General James McDowell ordered all units with less than 50 soldiers in order to be disbanded. This order prevented any new unit from being formed until September 1890 when a new brigade was created consisting of 100 men and 2 cannons. In 1895 a battalion was also raised and it became known as the "2nd Battalion Dakota National Guards" in 1898 when it moved to Pierre, South Dakota Territory which is now Cheyenne County, Wyoming. On July 10th 1912 a battalion (the "4th Battalion Dakota National Guards") was raised at Sioux City for service in World War I but never deployed because of suspension of military operations due to world war 1 conflict. In 1933 an act regarding military forces within the state of South Dakota passed through congress and became effective on January 1st 1934 which abolished all state militias except for those specifically authorized by statute including the National Guard Bureau's responsibility for organizing and training these units. The 1930s also saw significant changes within both the National Guard Bureau itself as well as within Yankton's municipal government with several organizational changes that occurred throughout this time including: establishment of an adjutant general corps; addition of artillery; establishment and designation of battalions/units; consolidation/divisionalization among brigades/units etcetera etcetera
