The Coast Guard gift history in Vermillion, South Dakota began with the formation of the State Patrol on November 3, 1907. The first gift from the State Patrol was a shotgun to Lieutenant John G. White. On December 1, 1912, Lawerence A. Petersen purchased an engine and tender for the Coast Guard at an auction in Omaha by bidding $5,000 dollars over three hours. The first vessel to be commissioned into service with the Coast Guard was HMCS "Omaha" which was laid down on September 20th, 1915 by Canadian Engineering Corporation Limited at its Edmonton shipyard. She was launched on October 14th and Commissioned on November 3rd under Commandant Edward Fenton Smith. In 1916 Captain Harry Cushing took command of HMCS "Omaha". On July 8th of that year she collided with HMS "Dartmouth" off Beechey Island and both vessels were sunk with loss of life. This event is considered to be the first use of a diesel-electric powered vessel by the Coast Guard as it resulted in her being converted into a sailing ship known as HMCS "Ramsay". Captain Harry Cushing left Active Service on January 1st, 1951 when he became Commodore Commander Naval Base St Louis MO before his death on May 15th 1972. His replacement Commodore James Ewart Hickey took command effective June 1st and continued until his retirement effective December 31st 1977 leaving office a record longevity holder for any Commodore Commander afloat at that time (see below). HMCS "Ramsay" served through both World Wars I & II continuing operations even after her original warship hull number had been retired from service list in 1957 she still operated out of Superior NM USMC base where she remained until decommissioned1993 however because she never properly stored away all her gear ashore like most other warships during those years finally restoration commenced in 2009 and finished up last week b4 launch
