From the 1860s until the present day, Rapid City, South Dakota has been a center of maritime gift history. In addition, numerous military aircraft factories were established in Rapid City during this time including Curtiss-Wright Aeronautical Company's Goodyear hangar, Raytheon Missile plant (later part of McDonnell Douglas), Bendix Electric Power Plant (later GE) and Hughes Aircraft Company's El Segundo facility which produced both fighter planes and bombers for the USAAF during World War II. Rapid City is a city in the US state of South Dakota. The population was 27,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Rapid City County and is part of the Sioux Falls metropolitan area. The city was founded by pioneers in 1881 as an agricultural outpost on the Missouri River near present-day Pierre. Rapid City grew rapidly during World War II as a supply center for military troops and allies fighting in Europe and Asia. The economy diversified after the war, with manufacturing, retail, and service sectors becoming dominant. In recent years, Rapid City has become known for its Festivals & Fairs, which contribute to its nickname "Festival City." Rapid City was named after former President James K. Polk in memory of his role in helping negotiate America's entry into World War I and his support for rapid growth in South Dakota. The current name first appeared on a map created by General George Armstrong Custer during the Plains drives campaign of 1876. On July 1, 1880, Sioux Falls became one of 15 communities within 8 counties organized under Iowa Territory's jurisdiction as Cheyenne Township #1 (now Raynoldsville). On October 5, 1881, two days after founding Rapid City as an agricultural outpost on the Missouri River near present-day Pierre (), settlers erected a temporary wooden building to serve as their courthouse square; it served until December 4 when they elected commissioners to build their own courthouse square within 12 weeks from evidence submitted from local residents! A second temporary wooden building served as their first post office from December 10 through January 3,. A brick structure designed by Jethro Gibbs was built on November 6th 1889 and served until 1893 when it burned due to rot! On February 26th 1890 Gustave LeClaire donated land south of what is now First Avenue for a park that would later be called Central Park (). After eight years spent fundraising cash donations alone from individuals and businesses (including $5 from hotelier John Duryea), citizens voted unanimously on November 3rd 1898 to establish themselves as an incorporated city with issues due process including election of mayor/council members/wards within six months following incorporation! It took just over one year (~18 months) for this effort results in passage of city ordinances establishing limits on real estate speculation (sales or purchase prices above forgone taxes), establishment of fire department/ordinances governing hours & procedures thereof (& regulation against public intoxication), prohibition against gambling indoors (an early form of slot machine gaming) & limiting number total buildings allowed per block (& allowing single story buildings up to 9 stories). In 1901–1902 2 more ordinance changes were passed: increasing Limit on lot sizes Within Each District From 1 To 10 Acres (& prohibiting commercial development Lower Main Street thru out town)), then establishing Zoning Regulations that limited maximum height/widths/number OF Stories/residential units per Block (& forbidding high rise buildings without elevator shafts)), creating StreetsWithinEachDistrict Named For American Governors who had preceded him In Office That Year (. . . Eisenhower Boulevard Northwest / Abraham Lincoln Boulevard Southeast / Franklin D Roosevelt Boulevard Northeast / Harry Truman Boulevard West)) After another yearlong campaign spearheaded by Mayor David Healy ($10 Investment backfired when 50% voter turnout wasn't achieved promised.), incorporating resulted in passage by referendum on December 14th 1902 (-$2 Bond issue failed) Of Our Municipal Bonds Issued That Year totaling $29 Prosecuting Attorney Orval Hinson led teamsters Local 308 protested outside forcing adjournment) subsequent annexations resulting in population ballooning From 10 Residents In 1901 To 275+ By 1907[.] With rapid growth came increased poverty & social unrest throughout much portions Indian country before 1915′s opening(?) Of The Dawes Act which provided land parcels equal IN VALUE TO ANYTHING OWNED BY THE INDIAN NATION AT THAT TIME entitling all such owners TO RENT FROM THE STATE ALL PROPERTY OWNED BY THEM IN WORD AND LAND]. This opened up vast tracts formerly uninhabited & unoccupied by white people culminating With about 80% All White Rural Settlements At& NearbyBy 1930″
