The Sioux Nation was one of many groups that fought against the United States during the American Civil War. The Sioux were known for their fierce fighting style and were well-armed and armored. One of the Sioux's most famous battles was the Battle of Little Bighorn, which took place in 1876. During the battle, many Sioux were killed or captured. Some of these Sioux warriors, including Sitting Bull, managed to escape. After the battle, Sitting Bull traveled throughout North America preaching his beliefs about Native American rights. In 1890, he returned to South Dakota and founded a village called Wounded Knee where he died in 1919. In Pierre, South Dakota, there is a monument dedicated to Sitting Bull that stands outside of town hall. The statue is made out of granite and has a plaque that reads "Sitting Bull - Hero for Indian Rights." The monument is one of several such monuments located inPierre around this time period.

Pierre, South Dakota is the small town located in the east corner of Douglas County on Highway 18. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. Pierre is known for its farmers and ranchers who have been a part of the town's history for over seventy years. The first settler in Pierre was George Hays who arrived in 1872. He built a cabin on a piece of land he acquired from the Sioux Nation. In 1875, Pierre was founded by James Fenton and his family who came from California. They named their new settlement after General John Custer during the Battle of Little Bighorn which occurred in July 1876 near present day Pierre. The Fenton family operated a grocery store and post office until 1906 when they sold everything to J.B. Beal who became mayor in 1912 and served until 1916 when he resigned due to term limits set by the then county official, Atherton Siskelmeyer Sr.. In 1916–1917, America’s entry into World War I led to an increase in traffic between Canada and Nebraska City as people traveled to do military service or buy supplies needed for war effort; this increased demand also caused more businesses to open up in Pierre including a movie theater (the first theater outside Omaha) and two livery stable operations that catered to soldiers quartered nearby Fort Neosho Lake aboard USS "New Mexico". During World War II, many residents were drafted into service and many businesses closed down because it was difficult for them to stay open without workers during wartime shortages; however, some continued operation such as Hays’ Store which reopened after the war with assistance from local Red Cross volunteers. It wasn't until 1954 that voters passed an ordinance legalizing liquor sales within city limits; however, alcohol sales only began at Beal's store four years later on November 2nd following ratification of an act by South Dakota State Legislature establishing Liquor Authority No 4 which included responsibility for setting prices and stocking alcohol while still providing customer service under direction of individual stores elected through secret ballot process supervised by state liquor board director Elisha Jorgensen..
