Mitchell was founded in 1881 by John Mitchell and his brother, Alexander. The town was named for General George Mitchell who fought in the Dakota War of 1862. The brothers developed a flour mill, an hotel, a store, and two schools. In 1913, the townsite was enlarged when the Cimarron River were dammed and now has a total area of 362 acres (160 hectares). The town is located in southern South Dakota on the Missouri River at its confluence with the Cimarron River. It straddles the border of Nebraska to the east and South Dakota to the west. Mitchell is bordered by Barnes County to the north, Armstrong County to the east, Floyd County to south, and Rice County to the west. The population of Mitchell as reported by census data from 2000 totaled 930 people. At that time it ranked as #27th largest city in South Dakota with a population of over 1,000 people. As of 2010 it ranks as #150th largest city in South Dakota with a population of under 100 people. The first recorded settlers arrived in Mitchell around 1881 when John Mitchell and his brother Alexander met up with some Sioux Indians near what is now known as Pierre City on Missouri River opposite today’s Spearfish along US Highway 12 East from Rapid City across Badlands National Park into North Dakota Territory then onto South Dakota Territory before finally landing hereabouts on December 20th 1881 after journeying all through Indian country near present day Pierre City (-111 degrees 26 minutes longitude). They had been traveling “downstream” from their home territory of Montana so they may have crossed over Armistead county line into Nebraska but there is no record this happened or anything like that according to contemporary source material which includes both oral histories written down about those days by later generations including my own direct ancestor Ole Anderson who lived hereabouts then also during those early years himself back then also among other pioneer families back then also all knowing about what transpired back then including family members themselves back then plus many others prior thereto including various missionaries working among these same warriorsback then also during that time period generally speaking what occurred between these various groups occupying different parts or areas thereof natural resources being abundant yes indeed even today there are numerous descendants still living hereabouts within easy reach especially given current global conditions thanks mostly to recent birthright moves away mainly due documented migration trends especially since 1959 which excludes residents herein defined previously except for our immediate predecessors Ole Anderson’s father Ole Rasmussen’s grandfather Rasmus Jensen’s father Madsen Rasmussen’s mother Mathilde Nielsen etc back then too much hasChanged since those earlier days particularly regarding culture values availability etc etc updates will follow soon enough
